"Welcome to the start of the new school year!"
The speaker's voice echoed throughout the gymnasium. She beamed as her next words filled the silence that was the students' response.
"I am very happy to see that for the very first time, the Hillward School for Boys and Mayzen School for Girls have finally merged, now known officially as Hilzen Academy."
Reluctant applause mixed with eager ones as Mrs. Jade Montgomery, head of the currently non-existent Mayzen School, beamed. "I believe that this very moment is fate. You see, the former headmasters and headmistresses of the two schools planned to merge the institutions since the founders of both schools are the same people, the great Mr. and Mrs. Nathan and Clarisse Ladden. But there always seems to be a defying force. Now, after the tragic fire that destroyed our school last year, the process flowed smoothly and way faster than we expected. And now, we are here as one school."
"Fortunately, Hillward School for Boys is big enough to cater both their current population and our girls as well. Starting this school year, this place will be the campus for junior high and senior high school students of Hilzen. The former site of Mayzen Academy, now beautifully renovated, will serve as the home of our kindergarten and primary pupils. I hope this will be the start of numerous friendships, wonderful memories... perhaps even love."
With that statement, different responses came from the audience. Some of the boys had their eyes on some of the girls, and vice versa. But at the left side of the gymnasium where the girls are seated, a group of three tried hard not to gag.
"That last part was just plain gross." A girl with shoulder-length black hair said.
"Well, not totally gross, Mei. Although I find some of the guys here downright disgusting," the girl at Mei's right commented. She suddenly yelped when the girl on her right pulled her braided pigtails. "That hurts, Sabby!"
"Don't say that out loud, Lyn! Although it's true, the girls around us think otherwise." The trio looked around them and practically saw hearts on their schoolmates' eyes. "We wouldn't want to start a war by degrading their crushes."
"It seems like they've never seen a guy in their whole lives," Mei responded.
Evangeline, Lyn for short, snorted. "Well, Mayzen is an all-girls boarding school. Maybe they forgot that boys exist outside our oh-so-sturdy walls that couldn't even handle a fire."
"Well, it was a fifth alarm fire... meaning it was definitely a strong force. Good thing it was summer and no one was hurt." Sab recounted.
"Fifth? Really? You even study the little details. Miss Gabrietta Sabrel Harron, you really deserve to be valedictorian," Lyn exclaimed as she saluted at her while Mei smiled.
"Little details matter, Lyn. Being on top… that depends now. It was a close match with Jake on who would be class valedictorian last year. I only won by mere three points," Sab muttered.
"You defeated him in junior high. You can do it again this year! Girls rule!" Mei exclaimed and did a high five with Lyn.
