Getting Acquainted

In that few minutes that Raven spent in Sophia's company, she was still not sure whether she could comprehend that little information she found out about herself or not. Though the real question was if the things she knew about herself now were really true.

She wondered all her life she spent on Earth what her connection with the medallion was; How did she get it? Why did she get it? and What did it mean? were the questions that simultaneously crossed her mind each time her fingers wrapped around the torques stone. After long years of being familiar with it she knew each graze, each dimple carved into it. Raven inspected the stone for so many nights that she was more familiar with its look than her own face. The strange, unearthly beautiful stone grew to be as much part of her as her heart and lungs were. It was part of her identity.

So how else could she react to Sophia telling her that it was a quite common mineral on Pandora other than with utter disbelief? There was a pinch of anger building up inside her when she listened to Sophia talking about the how-again-do-you-pronounce-it mineral. She spoke of it as something taken for granted, something inanimate - the complete opposite to how Raven understood it.

After a fifteen minute lecture and a pat on the shoulder, Raven left Sophia's workplace adding even more questions to her previous ones;

Were the people (possibly her parents) who gave her the medallion still alive? Were they waiting for her to find them? Why wouldn't Sophia tell her about them? Why did the question for which she visited Sophia remained unanswered? How many things did they still kept hidden from her?

The only way she could settle her mind and her racing thoughts was to retire somewhere where she could be by herself. She needed air, for she was kept behind walls for too long. Raven started to miss the freedom she felt as she was roaming the vast wastelands back on Earth. She missed the breeze blowing over her face, she missed the sight of the never-ending desert and the city behind her back. She missed her simple and humble life.

Knowing that that simple and humble life wasn't meant for her to be lived anymore, made her feel slightly melancholic and out-of-place. Raven wanted to feel rays of sunshine lighting up her face and she knew she wouldn't get to quench that urge any time soon. As long as she remained untrained in the arts of handling weaponry and knowing to defend herself, the enigmatic wilderness endured to be out of her reach.

Raven began to understand that nobody could answer her questions but herself. And the first step to come closer to the truth was to get good at training and learn about Pandora.

So the next day, she decided to appear slightly sooner than the other trainees, which sadly didn't benefit her not even in the slightest of ways. She found herself spending most of the time on her bottom than actually defending herself with the few moves Shepherd showed them for self-defense.

"Look alive, Raven!" he barked at her every now and then, making her feel even more uncomfortable.

Fortunately for Raven, she spent the last fifteen minutes training with Zoe, who was much more forgiving then the other trainees. She even showed her to correct her stand and make her more stable, preventing her to fall after an impact.

"You're really good," Raven praised her after their training. Zoe let out a soft laugh.

"I wouldn't be as good if it weren't for my dad."

Raven noticed the sudden change in her expression, her normally playful smile now a sad one. "Anyway, it would probably be good if we'd grab something to eat, right? I'm pretty hungry..."

With a sandwich in one hand and a bottle of water in the other, the two girls sat behind a table, facing each other.

"When will we learn about the wildlife?" Raven started the conversation, hoping that her eagerness wasn't noticed through her change in voice.
