Chapter 6
"We've started to get them again." I heard my mum say from dad's office. Her tone was a hushed whisper as though she was taking extra care to make sure no one heard her.
I froze in my step from the kitchen, stopping outside my dad's office when I heard the voices. Going to my room could wait for now. And sadly, so could my delicious popcorn.
There was scuffling in the room before another voice was heard. "What do you mean they've started again? I thought they'd stopped. They had stopped, I checked myself." My dad spoke up. There was the clear sound of worry in his voice, as well as a hint of anger which only signalled that whatever had returned wasn't something to be happy about and angered him greatly.
Walking forward, I stopped so I was basically pressed up against the office door so that I could hear more clearly what my parents were saying. Maybe I was being nosey, but when you're parents are having suspicious conversations, you want to know what they're about. I also wanted to see if I was involved in the conversation topic... who wouldn't want to know?
"They have... At least, they had. But they're back now and I'm getting worried. Why did they stop? Why have they started again, Will?" Mum stressed. I could imagine her pacing back and forth in the free space in the office, her hands running through her hair as she became more and more stressed out.
"Calm down, Vicky. Is it the same as before or are these new ones different?" Dad spoke up. He had probably stood up from his desk and moved so that he was stood directly in front of mum. His hands would be on her arms as he stopped her from pacing and attempted to calm her down; which probably wouldn't have worked because one of mum's most favourite things was to stress herself out as much as possible.
She succeeded almost every time. And it annoyed dad every time she succeeded.
"Well, they're the sound like they're from the same-"
"Finn!" I gasped, holding a hand up to my chest as his figure appeared in front of my face. "You scared the hell out of me."
"So I can see," he laughed. "What are you doing? Are you spying on your parents?"
I chuckled nervously as I glanced from Finn to the office door and back to Finn again. "I wouldn't say spying exactly..."
"Oh, yeah? What would you call it?" Finn asked curiously, raising one eyebrow as he waited for a response.
"More like... curiosity. Just checking to see if they're ok... you know; the normal caring daughter actions..." I trailed off, staring up at Finn to see what his reaction would be.
He stared at me for a moment before bursting out into laughter. "'Normal, caring daughter actions?' In other words, you were being nosey?"
"Nosey... Curious... Same thing. I was seeing if it had anything to do with me." I waved off, finally moving away from the office door in case either my mum or dad came out.
"And did it? Also, why are you lurking around here anyway?" He asked, following me away from the office and up the stairs.
Stopping mid-step, I turned around so that I could face him. Due to me being higher up the stairs, as I turned around, we were now pretty much the same height. Two extra stairs gave me the height to allow me to look straight into his eyes instead of looking up at him.
"Nope, it didn't. Well, I was making my way back from the kitchen," holding my hand up, I showed him the bag of popcorn and bowl I was holding. "I was getting snacks, and I heard my parents whispering. So being the 'normal, caring daughter' that I am, I decided to stop and see what was going on."
