CHAPTER 2
I woke up to the distinct sound of a cow mooing in a nearby paddock...making me think of the time I was just 11years old, and having to spend my Summer holidays here...it was nice and serene with Mum and Dad soaking up the Summers sun...I especially remember my Mum teaching me to ride one of the many stock horses, he was a bay with a white star.....I think his name was even Star? Cute little thing he was!
Mmmmm........I smelt the bacon coming from the farmhouse kitchen, it smelt divine!!
I quickly jumped out of bed and rummaged through my stuffed suitcase pulling out a long-sleeved black top, a pair of denim jeans.....oh god where did I put it! I thought to myself as I dug deeper and deeper into the bag, trying to find my huge huggable woolly jumper..."YES" I reefed it out of the now messy duffel bag. I hugged it tightly reminding me of my Mum who gave it to me for my sixteenth birthday... oh god I missed them.....
........
"Good – morning Sally" Aunty El sang out cheerfully. "Now would you like bacon and eggs or... something else?"
"Yes please...just no eggs" I said trying not to sound ungrateful. I hadn't liked eggs ever since I decided to cook some for my breakfast and it ended up really disgusting! They were far from cooked!! I cringed at the thought of the still slimy uncooked things.
"So what are you all going to do today?" I asked trying to make conversation.
They all looked at me in surprise...as if they'd never heard me talk before!
"Well?" I said quietly.
"Well, I'm going to go do some fencing to-day..., just the usual farm stuff" Uncle Max said as he sipped steaming black tea from his mug.
"Oh, okay ...so what's the usual farm stuff?" I asked as I bit into my lone bacon
He stared at me in surprise... I could tell he was almost shocked.
"Well, feed rolls out to the cattle, horses, and sheep. You can clean out the chicken yard if you like. Then I'll be taking a couple of the horses down to the flats, and tagging the new calf" He said happily.
Rigghhtt...me cleaning out a chicken yard! That's going to look like a joke. I thought to myself.
"So how do you clean out a chicken yard" I asked questionably
"I'll show you how" Aunty El chirped in.
I hadn't even noticed she was still in the room until just now...Jeez she was quiet...sometimes....
"Okay" I said unsure of how this would end up.
..............................
"Okay, so this is a rake" Aunty El pointed to the rake, as she looked up at me.
Bloody-hell she doesn't even think I know how to use a rake!!... Far out this is going to take forever!
"It's okay, I know how to use a rake" I said though my voice was barley a whisper.
"Oh, good that makes things easier" Aunty El said as she smiled.
"So what you do is, take everything out of the chicken yard, rake it like this" She made quick raking actions across the large chicken yard... she must think I'm a complete idiot.
"Rake it onto a big pile in the middle of the yard" she quickly added.
I nodded in reply to everything she was saying...I kind of just wanted to get in and do it!
