Chapter 3: Unwelcome
Amelia Celeste Adelaide Aldbridge Police Department
"So Amelia, what do you think?" I heard Debbie say after we stepped out of the Chief's office.
I tilted my head at her, "What do I think of what exactly?"
She started to walk towards a bench near the office and I followed suit. "What do you think of the job, officers, Chief Peters and Robert?" I saw her raise her eyebrow and I knew exactly what she was thinking.
"Well, I do love the job. Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to be a detective. The thought of helping people and keeping them safe is such a rewarding feeling. What about you?"
She nodded as she fished out her phone from her pocket and showed me a picture of Debbie alongside a man with greying hair and deep creases on his forehead, "My father used to be a police officer. He's retired now. I looked up to him so I think that's where the love of crime busting came from. Plus, it really is a cool job!"
I laughed, "Yes, it truly is. There's never a boring moment. As for the officers, I honestly don't know what to think of anybody yet. I haven't had the chance of meeting anybody else except for you, Stephen, the Chief and Mr. Clifford," I sighed, "I'm sorry. I must have seemed like a bitch yesterday. Not a very good first impression."
She smiled, "On the contrary, a lot of officers think you're a great addition to the department after you stood up to Stephen," she leaned closer and whispered, "Not a lot of people likes him. He gets on everybody's nerves, just like how you did. The Chief can't let him go since he's the only one who's really good at dealing with the forensics team," she started to laugh, "They're always stressed out with the amount of work to be done that has to be immediately sent back to the department. Stephen's always around them to keep their nerves in check. I guess that's one of the reasons why the team warmed up to him very quickly."
"Well, that's good. At least he's making a difference. I used to know a bunch of good cops gone bad. Hopefully, he won't turn out as such."
"Not now at least," I heard Debbie mumble under her breath.
I stole a glance at Debbie. Her short blonde locks fell to one side of her face as she tilted her head to look at the distance. Even though her eyes were covered by a pair of thick sunglasses, she looked as if she was deep in thought.
Does she truly think Stephen would do something horrible? Even though he made some pretty harsh comments about me yesterday, and I assume to a few others, I don't think he's the type of person who could commit a crime.
Finally, she looked back at me with a huge smile on her face. It's like she already has forgotten what had been said, "So? What do you think of Robert? I can tell that there is some unspoken things between you two," she said while nudging at me playfully.
"What unspoken things?" I raised an eyebrow at her, "Why would you think so?"
"Oh, don't play innocent with me! Remember I'm a cop, too. It was so obvious when I opened the door and caught you both in the middle of your really up-close conversation."
She stared at me and I averted my gaze, "Debbie, there is hardly anything going on between us."
"So you're hoping that there should be something going on?" she questioned, "Interesting."
I was a bit flabbergasted, "I only met the man yesterday and you already assume that we have connected with each other on an emotional level?"
"Well, of course not," she grinned, "Not that quickly anyway. But by the way both of you are working, it might be soon enough."
