With my last hope now gone I began imagining the feeling of its rotten teeth sinking into my neck.

The blade of my knife reflected back whatever dim light there was. And I was really feeling all the gravel and branches pressing into my back.

That's why you aim for the fucking brain and not jaws or mouth or chin. It's no use and this is why people die...

This is why I'll die.

A shot rang out close by. I would've thought I was dead but the undeniable stench of brains and blood was now soaking my clothes and covering my face.

I spluttered even though the walker had stopped trying to eat me.

"Ya a'right?" His voice sounded muffled but I'm pretty sure I heard right.
I wiped my eyes with my one free hand "I-I think, yeah."
I struggled to push the limp body off of me. But he kicked the thing with such force it rolled off me and into the bushes.

He breathed heavily as he extended his hand. "Hell ya doin'?"
"I was going to grab C/n."

I gratefully slipped my hand into his larger one and he pulled me up so suddenly it felt like I was floating... woah. He was strong, I was like nothing to him.

I was the closest to this man in this moment. Close enough to see the sweat gleaming on his skin.
"Thanks," I chuckle and it's a bit awkward. We have words avaliable for exchange but brother of us consider it necessary. So we don't talk.

But he doesn't retreat to the campfire.

The moment she was in my arms my anxiety calmed, realising I'd been shaking.

She was here.
In my arms, her warmth I can feel.
The purring frequency she emitted too.
This is real.
I'm still alive.

I kept thinking that the nightmare would be over soon but the sun rose turning the nightmare into our reality.

I was pulled out of re-experiencing the way Ash hissed at me from the corner. Her tail held between her legs and her back hunched.

"Mhm," I nodded, what the sheriff said was right. I'd been hearing talk of the CDC and some military base.

All this brutality combined with a possible lack of sleep had made me start thinking about life. I felt bad for bringing Ash here, here to this place that has instated fear so deep inside her. My words would be useless trying to explain to her what had really happened last night. But even if we could communicate I wouldn't even be able to assure her safety.

But of I hadn't brought her with me she would have starved or worse been ripped to shreds on the street.

But how would I be able to judge which is worse? It's not my place to play God. I've no right to make choices on the lives of others.

Now I'm thinking too much but death does tend to do make a person think.

Andrea was unmoving, still in the same position as she initially was when the attack had started. It was like she couldn't feel the sun on our backs or hear the words being said around her.

Only the wind tousled loose wisps of her blonde hair. Her sheer shirt and pale face made her seem like an appiration. All the blood from Amy's wounds had now been marinating into skin for hours.

Even in the daylight she seemed just as ghostlike as her sister.
