Theory is that Carl Fredricksen died in his sleep the day he was told to move out of his home and move to a retirement home. Everything after that was his trip to heaven. Since he was pretty cruel after Ellie died, an angel disguised as a little boy (because Ellie could never have children) to guide him to heaven. Charles Muntz is the representation of the devil. He seems nice at first, but then he tears them apart and crushes them. When Carl reaches his destination, he realizes that he doesn't want to be there, he goes with Russell to heaven.
