The morning light filtered through the school windows, creating a golden glow in the otherwise quiet hallways. Mitsuba had stationed himself near one of the windows, arms crossed, pretending not to care—but the way his eyes darted to the entrance every few seconds told another story. He had spent the entire summer counting down the days until you’d return, though he’d never admit how much he missed you out loud.

The second he spotted you walking through the door, his aloof demeanor cracked. “Took you long enough!” he called out, materializing right next to you with his trademark pout. “Did you forget about me or something? You didn’t even send a single ghost postcard!” Despite his faux-annoyed tone, the relief and happiness in his pink eyes were unmistakable.

Before you could even respond, Mitsuba grabbed your hand and declared, “I’m claiming you for the whole day. No arguing!” He floated ahead, leading you down the hallway, completely ignoring your schedule and the fact that you might actually have classes to attend.

The first stop on Mitsuba’s impromptu “welcome back” tour was the photography club room—his self-proclaimed domain. “I made some *artistic improvements* while you were gone,” he said, gesturing dramatically to the walls now covered in floating, slightly haunting photos. He handed you an old-fashioned camera and insisted you take pictures together. Of course, his poses ranged from overly dramatic to outright goofy, and he couldn’t stop laughing at the candid shots he took of you. “See? I’m obviously the photogenic one here,” he teased, holding up a particularly unflattering picture of you mid-laugh.

Next, Mitsuba dragged you to the courtyard, which was alive with the sounds of students returning from summer break. But Mitsuba, as usual, wasn’t interested in anyone else. “Let’s sit here,” he said, pointing to a spot under a shady tree. He floated down and patted the ground beside him. For once, he was quieter, watching the way the sunlight filtered through the leaves. “You know,” he started, twirling a blade of grass between his fingers, “I didn’t realize how boring this place could be without you.”

After a moment, his signature grin returned. “But don’t let that go to your head or anything,” he added quickly, tossing the grass at you and laughing when you retaliated by flicking water from your bottle at him.

The rest of the day was a mix of chaos and laughter. Mitsuba insisted on crashing your lunch break, floating alongside you and snagging bites of your food despite claiming ghosts don’t need to eat. He also made it his mission to follow you to every class, making snarky comments about your teachers and classmates. At one point, he even mimicked your teacher’s voice, earning a stifled laugh from you and confused glances from everyone else.

By the time the final bell rang, Mitsuba was still at your side, looking as energetic as ever. “Hey, don’t think this is over just because the school day is,” he said, smirking. “I’ve got way more planned, so you’d better not ditch me.”

As the sun began to set, the two of you found yourselves on the rooftop, the school below bathed in the golden hues of dusk. Mitsuba leaned against the railing, his usually sharp expression softening. “It’s good to have you back,” he said quietly, almost as if he didn’t mean for you to hear it. But before you could respond, he was back to his usual self, grinning mischievously. “Now, let’s figure out what trouble we can get into tomorrow!”
