One warm summer weekend, Stevie's niece, Jessica, was staying the weekend at Stevie's house. Jessica, being only seven years old, was thrilled to spend time with her aunt. She'd been looking forward to this for weeks, especially with school out and summer in full swing. Friday evening started off with the usual routine: Jessica was put to bed by 8 PM, her usual bedtime. Stevie checked in on her before heading to bed, knowing it would be a fun weekend ahead.
Meanwhile, Karen, who had come to Stevie's house for a bit of a quiet retreat, found herself working late into the night. As she flipped through papers, her mind focused on her tasks, it was nearly 9 PM when Stevie came in to check on her.
"Hey Karen," Stevie said, leaning against the doorframe. "I just wanted to let you know that there's a storm moving in. The rain's going to be pretty heavy, and the roads might get slick. You might want to stay the night rather than drive back in that."
Karen paused, looking up from her work. She didn't mind staying; after all, she had her own room, and the idea of not driving in bad weather was a good one. "That sounds fine," Karen said with a nod. "I can just finish up in the morning."
By 11 PM, Stevie was already fast asleep in her own room. Karen, having finished up her work, was finally settling in for the night. She leaned back in bed, writing in her journal for a while, letting the calmness of the house lull her into a relaxed state.
However, about thirty minutes later, as she wrote, Karen saw her bedroom door creak open slightly. She raised an eyebrow. For a moment, she thought it might be Stevie, but then irritation flickered across her mind. Karen had one rule in her boss' home: Stevie was never to come into her room without knocking or asking first.
When the door fully opened, though, Karen was surprised to see Jessica standing there, clutching her little stuffed bunny under her arm.
"Jessica?" she said softly, the sharpness gone in an instant, replaced with something far gentler. "Hey... sweetheart. What's wrong?"
Jessica didn't answer right away.
Her eyes were wide, glossy, fixed somewhere past Karen like she wasn't fully anchored in the room.
And then—
A thunder crack split the sky.
It wasn't distant. It was immediate. Violent. The kind that seemed to shake through the glass and into the bones of the house.
Jessica flinched hard.
Karen's entire posture softened as understanding clicked into place.
"Oh, baby..." she murmured, setting her journal aside without hesitation.
Another low roll of thunder followed, longer this time, rumbling through the walls.
Karen shifted back in bed and patted the space beside her, her voice turning steady and warm in that unmistakably maternal way she only used when there was no room left for anything but comfort.
"Come here, sweetheart. It's alright. You're okay. Come sit with me."
Jessica hesitated for only a second—another flash of lightning brightening the room like a sudden, harsh day—and then she climbed up quickly, still gripping her bunny like it was the only solid thing in the world.
Karen immediately pulled the blanket around her.
"There we go," she whispered, tucking it snugly around Jessica's shoulders. "Right here. You're safe."
Jessica's breathing was still uneven, shallow little bursts as she tried to settle.
Karen brushed a hand gently over her back in slow, grounding strokes.
