Emily shut the book.
"I feel like our stories coming to an end... Surely now you'd want to wake up, especially after hearing all the things we had gone through..... Daniel I can't do this anymore. The moment I finish you're diary I'm going to have to step back into reality and make a decision on whether or not to turn off the machine." She sighed.
"And I don't think I'm ready to lose you." She whispered, as a tear drop slipped from her eyes and swiftly hit the ground.
She wiped her eyes with a tissue and slowly got up, gave Daniel a kiss on the cheek and then got Dylan and Jane to say their goodbyes, so they can all go home.
She was tired.
Tired of waiting, but what else could she do.
"So mother if you'd like Jane said she doesn't mind bringing you back here tomorrow... If you'd like?" Dylan said as he looked at his mother.
"Thank you dear," Emily replied and nodded, but she wasn't so sure. She didn't know if she could face Daniel, knowing that this could be their last moments.
Time went by slowly the next day as Emily stared at the clock waiting and waiting. She drank her tea and watched Matthew play with his teddy.
Then she looked down at her lap and her eyes were fixed on the diary which she had kept with her since they left the hospital. Jane came into the living room and looked at Emily. She felt sympathy towards her. So she went over and gave her a hug.
"Hey the minute you stepped out that hospital room I could tell something was wrong... So you want to tell me?" Jane asked softly.
"This," Emily said picking up the diary. Jane looked confused.
"It's Daniel's diary. My mother gave it to him as a wedding present, she said to write all the happy, sad and basically important moments of our lives so we won't ever forget. And every time I've visited Daniel, I've always taken it with me because a part of me believes that if I could remind him of all the things we've been through then maybe just maybe he'll come back to me... Like he always did," Emily said
"So what's wrong?" Jane said still confused.
"Well ever since the last time we visited him and reading the book to him. I've realised that I was going to lose him anyway because bad stuff always happens to me. I was never supposed to live a happy life as I've been through so much but I've always had Daniel by my side and now..." Emily answered not sure what to say next as she practically bared her soul.
"But you did.. You did have a good and happy life. Think about it. You are one of the lucky ones, you and Daniel have spent most of your lives together. I mean if you were going to lose him, then why didn't it happen earlier.. And as you said he always comes back to you. So maybe the diary is trying to remind you that," Jane said full of hope.
"Do you really believe that?" Emily asked. "Well I'm no psychic but call me an optimist. Just don't lose hope.. not yet anyway. I mean who knows what's going to happen." Jane replied trying to reassure Emily, who seemed better.
"Let's go and see him," Emily said as she got up, picked up the diary and went out. Jane gave a huge grin as she too got up and went to get Matthew ready. Once they were all ready and settled in the car, Jane drove off to the hospital.
Jane came out of the Daniel's room. "I'll be in the waiting room.. Take as long as you need," She said to Emily.
Emily nodded and headed into the room. She took a deep breath as she sat down. She stared at Daniel for a couple of minutes. Then she finally got his diary out of her bag.
"Right where was I?" she said flipping through the pages.
Dear diary,
I had stayed at Emily's house for 2 months now, nearly forgot I had my own life to get back to. Nearly forgot about the wedding too, that's until Lily rang me up to know why I hadn't been back yet. Told her business was taking long and that I will definitely be back before the wedding. But was that a lie? I didn't want to go back but I couldn't let Lily down.
I decided when I visited Emily in prison again I'll tell her how I felt about her and see if she felt the same way. Maybe she didn't, then I guess I'll be able to go back without anything stopping me.
I waited and waited. Then the prison officers came and said we can go into the room. I went in, butterflies in my stomach. Every time I go to see her I get excited. I sat down opposite her and couldn't stop smiling.
We talked and talked. And then I blurted it out.
"I'm still in love with you. I haven't stopped loving you. I want you, me and Dylan to be a family. I don't mind waiting, even if it means for two more years. I don't care I'll do it cause I want you, I've always wanted you.... Marry me?" I said this all too fast I didn't think she understood. She drove me crazy and I ment every word.
Her face lit up as her mouth broke into a smile. "Yes! Yes of course I will, I mean if you're really sure about waiting for me. But you don't have to." She said as she got up and pulled me up with her.
"I would wait a whole life time, if it means we could finally be together," I said as I smiled.
We kissed and hugged, until the prison officers broke us apart. It felt so good, it felt right. The rest of that day nothing could wipe my smile of my face. I just wasn't sure how I was going to break it to Lily.
A week went by and it was getting close to my wedding. Still wasn't sure how I was going to tell Lily the truth, I really didn't want to hurt her. I took Matthew out, we both needed fresh air.
If only I had known about the big surprise that was going to be waiting for me when we had came back.
