When we got in the car, the first thing he said, after asking my address, was "How'd you meet her?"

"What?" His words broke into my reverie.

"How did you guys meet?" he asked again.

"In school, we have a few classes together, and when I saw her alone at lunch, I couldn't just ignore her. So, I sat with her and we started talking."

"She was alone? You're sure no one was near her?"

"Everyone has made it quite clear that they have no interest in her, which I don't get because I find her to be a very interesting person. I don't see why they don't want to be around her."

"Well, I'm glad at least she has someone like you to keep her company," he said thoughtfully.

"I want you to know that I don't plan on hurting your daughter. I promise to protect her and love her always. I don't know where I'd be without her. I just wish I got to meet you guys under less sucky conditions."

"No, don't get me wrong, I'm glad you two are together. But, I just don't know much about you...."

"Then go ahead and ask me questions, I'll answer them."

"Where did you live before you moved here?"

"Ohio."

"What made you move so far away?"

"My parents wanted a new start, and also my dad's job moved here. So, we came to Maine."

"I see...uh, mind if I ask a personal question?"

"No, go ahead."

"Are you a...have you...you know?" He stuttered.

"Are you trying to ask me if I'm still a virgin?" I chuckled.

"Yeah, that."

"Yes, I wanted to wait until the time was right and make sure I was with the right girl before I did something like that."

"Well, Reese we just might get along pretty well then."

"I look forward to that." I smiled.

"And Reese?"

"Yeah?"

"You can call me Jack if you'd like."

"Okay, if you want me to I will."

He then turned down my street and into my driveway.

"Thanks again for the ride," I said as I got out of the car.

"You're welcome, anytime."

Her parents seemed pleasant but out of touch,  a complete contrast to the kind of people my parents were. I nodded my head towards Jack and he started to drive away as I headed into my house.
