It was around late 5 o'clock when we finished the movie. Kaz had to get home before 6 and left early. Near the end of the movie, Brian walked Monaé to her house before it started raining.
Now It was just me and Noni on the couch cuddling underneath a blanket.
"Be honest with me," Nonï turned on her side to look at me. "How do you feel? You never really expressed how you felt after you got your meds. Do the feelings still come back every now and then? Do you still have nightmares about your brother?"
The fact I didn't mention how depressed I was to Noni until the second semester of sophomore year, sort of put a split in our relationship. It wasn't an intentional split, it just happened. I pushed her away before I realized what I was doing. She loved my big brother too, so she wasn't the only sad one. We didn't really talk much after that, but when I told her I was getting help, she started checking up on me on the regular.
Her questions caught me off guard. I turned to look at her and she had this look of sympathy. I could never lie to her and hiding my feelings from her for so long felt like lying. I had to tell her. But did I? I was going to get better. I was better.
"I'm feeling better actually. I thought by now I would have crashed, but My tank is not on empty. And if it is close to being empty I'll make sure to refill it." I said with a smirk on my face.
"You always have to answer my questions indirectly but I'll let it go," she said rolling her eyes, "For now."
"Ohh, c'mon you love my indirect answers," I said tucking my head into her shoulder.
"You're not you without them to be honest," she said while stroking my hair, "So... You and Kaz?"
"Me and Kaz what?" I said blankly.
"He couldn't stop staring at you! You didn't notice?" She said.
"Nah," I said smoothly, "He is beautiful though."
"Girl yes he is, but a little too much for my taste. It kind of irks me that I still don't know anything about him. I don't even know the boys last name." She said.
What she was telling me was making me want to engage with him even more.
"You said y'all talked over twitter, what about?" I asked.
"Nothing really. They were really dry conversations about school." She said.
"Oh, that is weird," I said.
This boy was a walking mystery. His name was Kaz, came here from Florida, and his favorite alcohol beverage is vodka infused with gummy bears. And let's not forget that he wants to get to know me. I knew he was going to run through my mind until I knew more.
"It's almost 6, I should get you home before my parents come home." She said inhaling. "Remember in middle school when your brother would come pick you up from my house? Those were the days!" she said chuckling.
"Yeah, they were." I said.
We drove to my house listening to the Sampha. The gray clouds fully covered the sky now and started releasing tiny drops of water.
She pulled into my driveway and parked and we sat in complete silence before I said "See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah, we can go to Starbucks before we head to school. Lord knows I need a large mocha before entering that place." She said exhausted.
"What would I do without you?" I smiled and exited the car. She waited until I got into my house before backing out the driveway and heading back home.
