Fern's hand shook as she helped Daniel to the front door of the Manor. It had seemed like ages since she had begun her library project. She knew that he would love to see it. He looked nervous as he prepared to go inside. He had left his home years ago under duress. His age and being alone in an unkempt old house alot like cousin Vera had worried all of his siblings about his welfare and they had all given him orders to go to the assisted living home in exchange for selling to someone distantly related and keeping his room always available for long stays. As well as offering the Manor library to stay open to citizens of their town. Like Chessie he had always had a love for stories. Perhaps the biggest one was the adventure unfolding today at his childhood home.
Late in the night last night Fran was awoken by crying behind the walls. When she went looking for the cause, she found nothing just a whole wing that had long since been boarded up due to disuse and disrepair. Daniel had told her never to let anyone wander that wing as the plaster ceiling required repair. She knew that it was not the first time that sound had been heard, and she thought of the strange specter she saw playing piano with her son that long-ago night.
She was too old to go looking for ghosts. Speaking of ghosts. Brittany's father had not come down yet from his room to see any of the men who would give him the house he so desired and send him on his way. Brittany had gone to spend the night with Mari at the Gray's according to Brooklyn. She was glad they were getting along again. Mack and Ingrim had spent the night in the loft above the barn. Things were starting to shape up already. Or so she thought.
Brittany and Bridgette weren't the only ones with pain-laden pasts lurking in the corners and kept closely within the Manor walls.
Deep in the woods stood a woman with a grudge. A woman who moved between Manors at will. She had come to collect the girl and bring her back to Vermont. Only Ingrim in his fear-addled state, had seen her here. Daniel always did but he knew things they did not know. Fran was a key, and so was she. One from the past and one for the future it was the Briarwood way. Daniel had come home to set things right. But she could feel another Greene hovering in the shadows. She could not risk the man or that little girl seeing the truth. She would go down to the water and search for the one who was wandering lost and alone. It was time to bring some of them home. The rule was simple 13 Greene's and 6 Greys at a time. She wandered and waited. This one was cunning and crafty like a shark. It could smell blood and fear. It also created it. Some did not even know they were suspended between spaces left from before and yet venturing beyond.
There was no place at the Manor for these who could not go home again
. Brooklyn smiled from the treehouse ladder as he saw Daniel standing in the window of his old bedroom. He had been waiting so long for this house to bring back his oldest and dearest friend. All the others were players here in a larger story, but Daniel had always been the Manor's heart.
