He was in front of me still standing. Unmoving. In the middle of the living room where our family had gathered. There was no warning. No buildup. One moment I was surrounded by soft colors of flower, murmurs of leaves, shifting of sun kisses and the next, his voice broke through the quiet like it belonged there.
“Will you be the brightest star in my dark life?”
That was all he said. No speech. No flourish. Just one line, steady but unsure like it had been sitting on the edge of his mouth for days and waiting for the right kind of silence to fall into. And it did. Everything stopped. I could hear the rustle of the curtains beside. The wind caught its breath. Even the chai cups clinking from the kitchen paused like the house itself had frozen with us.
I looked at him. He was not trying to make a scene. There was no grandness in the way he stood. If anything, there was something almost hesitant in the set of his shoulders as if this was not the kind of thing he knew how to do. But he was doing it. In front of everyone.
His family stood behind him, visibly stunned. His sister blinked as though unsure she was hearing correctly. Krystal Aunt's lips parted, trembling just slightly. Even Aryan Uncle who always carried pride like armor looked quiet. Not in disappointment but in disbelief.
They were uttering shocked by his words. So I was. He had walked away from me. Days ago. When I confessed him without planning that I loved him. The words had left my mouth with a soft, frightened honesty. They had not asked for anything in return. I had not expected a reply. Still when he left without one, it felt like something inside me had been gently set down and walked away from.
Not broken. Just left behind. And now he was here asking. Just standing tall in front of both our families, asking me to step into a life as brightest star? Was I worthy of this kind words? Was I even capable of becoming star in his life? I was not truly prepared neither I anticipated this words ever.
