Veronica stood outside the old storage facility, heart pounding.
Clark and Bella were beside her, exchanging wary glances.
"Are we really doing this?" Bella muttered, crossing her arms against the chill of the night air.
"We have to,"Veronica said, fingers curled around the key she'd stolen from her mother's study. "Whatever she's hiding—it starts here."
Clark exhaled. "Just be ready to run if this goes bad."
They stepped forward, shadows stretching beneath the flickering streetlight. The facility loomed ahead—silent, forgotten, "holding secrets none of them were ready for."
Veronica pressed the key into the lock.
It turned.
Click.
The door creaked open, revealing darkness beyond.
Then—her phone buzzed in her pocket.
She almost ignored it. "Until she saw the name on the screen."
Her breath caught.
William.
For a moment, the world blurred. The weight of the investigation, Alex, her mother—everything faded into the background.
Clark frowned. "Who is it?"
Bella glanced at the screen.
"No way," she whispered.
Veronica swallowed hard, thumb hovering over the answer button.
William hadn't called in weeks. Months, even.
And now, just as she was about to step into something dangerous—he appeared.
Her pulse hammered.
Should she answer?
Or should she let the past stay buried?
