When we get home there is a light on in my flat. So. I invite Lauren in. We are greeted by my very excited 2 year old. Lauren crouches down, and puts out her hand. Cameron's face turns a bright red he looks at me and I give him a reassuring nod.

He shakes Lauren's hand then embraces his little body into Lauren. Lauren picks him up and he rests his head on her shoulder.

We walk past Dylan an Tyler asleep on the couch. The TV at a low volume. I turn the power off. And lead Lauren into mine and the kids room.

Lauren tucks Cameron in. I kiss him on the head and step back. "Story." He whispers.

I start to think of one, then Lauren starts. "There was once a girl, she played a lot of pranks and got herself into quite a bit of trouble. This girl, she had one class a day -music- with another girl. The other girl was the prettiest girl in the school but, she never had the confidence to even say hello. Then a few years later the girl bumps into the other girl- literally. At this unconventional party. And she realises she wasn't the prettiest girl in the school... She's the most beautiful girl she's ever seen in her life."

Cameron looks up at Lauren, "Then what happens?"
Lauren giggles, "I don't know. What do you think happens next."
Cameron's eyes widen, " The girls buy a dragon and then they live happily ever after."
Lauren smiles, "That's exactly right."
I laugh," Goodnight Cam."
He yawns a "goodnight Mommy."

We exit my room, I open the window and climb out onto the fire escape. I do this on occasion to clear my head. Lauren follows me out.

We sit there for a few minutes before I manage the confidence to say, "So that story... Was that true?"
She exhales, "Yeah... I'm afraid so."
She looks down at the car park before continuing," Camilla... You're wasting your potential here. You're worth so much more."

I wish I was mad at her. But that is the first time anybody has ever told me I'm worth something.

Lauren looks into my eyes, "Look at me Camilla. Look at me and tell me you're worth it."

I look at her, I take a deep breath and whisper, "I'm worth it." Lauren leans towards me and puts her lips on mine.

Worth it. (Camren)Where stories live. Discover now
