"But she is my wife."
The words echoed through the massive hall. A hush fell over the room. It was so quiet that even the faint rustling of clothes could be heard.
But Veilbreaker sat there, composed and confident.
Unbothered.
Erum’s reaction?
She was too overwhelmed — too focused on the Head knowing about her actions — that her mind didn’t fully register her enemy’s words.
But a small part of her did.
“Is she?” the Head asked, turning his gaze toward Zayyan.
Veilbreaker didn’t said a word.
He simply turned his head towards Erum.
And when she saw the Head’s eyes shift back to her too, waiting for an answer—
Absentmindedly, she nodded.
A few more gasps escaped around the hall.
Quiet.
Shocked.
Disbelieving.
Erum blinked slowly, as if waking from a trance.
What had she just agreed to?
Wife of Veilbreaker?
Her enemy?
But before she could take back her nod...
The Head narrowed his eyes.
“You expect us to believe that?” he asked, his voice sharp.
Zayyan didn’t flinch.
“I don’t expect anything,” he replied coolly. “I stated a truth.”
The Head looked between them — her shaken, him steady.
“Proof?” he asked.
Zayyan tilted his head slightly, almost amused. “There was no rule about registering marriages within the agency.”
The Head didn’t look convinced.
Neither did the people around.
Erum stayed silent.
Her heart thudded in her chest.
Too loud. Too fast.
And yet — Veilbreaker sat there, still. Calm. Certain.
Like he knew exactly what he was doing.
"Well then, Mr. Yahya, we’re sorry to announce that your wife has broken a rule at MDA," he stated.
Veilbreaker — Zayyan — raised an eyebrow.
"And what rule is that?" he asked, though he already knew.
The Head had made it quite clear before.
The Head continued, "She broke into the Archive Hall."
"Any proof?" Zayyan asked calmly.
Everyone in the meeting listened in complete silence.
The two men speaking were composed, neither showing a hint of backing down.
The Head turned to one of the Viziers and gave a slight nod. The Vizier nodded back and played a CCTV video on the large screen behind the Higher-ups.
Footage of Erum Zamurd.
There, for everyone to see.
"Last night," the Head began, voice steady and serene, "there was an unusual breach in MDA’s department. All the lights were turned off during the incident. And somehow, she managed to break in, knowing the passcode."
He leaned back slightly.
"But, unfortunately for her," the Head added, "the cameras were operating on night vision mode."
Zayyan’s gaze never glanced at the footage.
Erum, who had been standing the whole time, couldn’t take her eyes off the screen.
