PIC OF BETTY ABOVE
It was Betty's first year at Hogwarts, and she was very excited. She and her friends were moving into fifth year.
Hogwarts seemed such a grand place. The castle was mind-blowing, to Betty, as was magic altogether. She had never quite come to terms with magic being plausible or real, happy to stick with texting her friends back in the muggle world, and walking to school with her earplugs in. She had a caring, kind mother, and crazy friends that she could not help but love.
But it is September, and here she is at Hogwarts, gathered in the Great Hall, in smart robes, and with a pointed hat sitting upon her wavy brown hair. And she is excited, just as excited as all of the other new students, it seems.
After the Sorting, she gathers with her friends briefly before the Start-Of-Term Feast. Ruby, Alex and Jessica all look very pleased, but Betty can not really tell if Alex is pleased or not, as she is peering longingly at her phone screen, at pictures of the muggle actor, Ben Whishaw.
"I tell you," Alex exclaims, "One day, Ben Whishaw will become a wizard, and we will ride off into the sunset together, and watch Sherlock for the rest of our lives."
Aine rolls her eyes, as does Betty. Ruby makes an inappropriate joke, as usual. They all discuss their houses together, that they have been sorted into. Ruby is in Gryffindor, Alex is in Ravenclaw, Jessica and Aine are in Hufflepuff, and Betty is in Slytherin.
"I do wonder, why are you in Slytherin?" Jessica inquires, and Betty shrugs.
"Maybe it's because I'm secretly evil," she replies casually, waggling her eyebrows up and down. However Jessica looks alarmed. She grabs onto Betty's wrist and grips it tightly.
"What's wrong, Jess?" asks Ruby. She couldn't help but find the distressed look on Jessica's face amusing.
"Don't make jokes like that, Betty!" Jessica says angrily, "I'm close friends with Sybill Trelawney, the palm-reader professor, and she says that I am a talented Palm-reader. When you made that joke, I suddenly became very worried... Please, refrain from..."
"Alright, alright!" everyone breaks in, waving off Jess' words, thinking that they are nonsense...
But are they nonsense? Jess questions to herself, Or is there reason to worry? Is something bad going to happen to Betty?
Jessica is always having thoughts like these - insights into the future, bad feelings, voices in her head. She's born for divination, and everyone knows it. Jess is probably the quietest of the group, but she's still very outgoing and opinionated. Her long brown hair marks her out from the crowd, and is matched with light skin and pale blue eyes.
"Are you guys excited to start lessons tomorrow?" asks Aine excitedly. Aine has short reddish-brown hair, with bright eyes to match her clever, quick-thinking mind. She is sarcastic, but without being hurtful.
Ruby speaks up next. "Yeah, but like, pretty nervous too. Or is that just me?" Ruby is the only blonde-haired member of the group, but she's not a ditz. She's loud and fairly easily distracted, but insightful at the best of times. Like Alex, the Ravenclaw of the group, she has a thirst for knowledge. Alex however has a short, dark brown pixie cut, with bright green eyes that sparkle when she laughs.
"No," Betty smiles, "It's going to be an interesting year ahead. You have the right to be nervous."
And Betty's nervous too. But she's ready to take on everything that being a student at Hogwarts has to offer.
(edited authors note) Okay so I guess this story is pretty plotty and this chapter doesn't really say much about the rest of the story. It's just a bit of an introduction. Continue reading for lots of romance and angst :ooo <3
Also, i'm sorry if there is any confusion about what year they are in after this chapter, but they are in fifth year.
