Victoria's fingers flew across her phone screen, typing a quick update to Samantha before stashing the device back into her jacket pocket. The soft, domestic warmth from the text message evaporated instantly as her eyes drifted back to the harsh, high-contrast glow of the boardroom monitor.

The digital map of San Antonio's Southside glowed cold blue against the dark glass of the display. Victoria stepped up to the board, taking a dry-erase marker and drawing a precise vector line from the downtown bus terminal toward a grid of industrial zones three miles south.
"Look at the timestamp logic, Alan," Victoria said, her voice dropping into that cool, analytical frequency. "If Marco intended to board that 21:00 bus, he would have remained in the central concourse staging area. Instead, his secondary burner card registered a micro-transaction at the gas station on Flores Street at 11:12 AM."
Alan folded his arms, his eyes scanning the geometry of her dry-erase lines. "That's completely counter-directional to the bus depot. He's intentionally creating a false trail."
"Exactly. Ray Vance's enforcers are monitoring the primary transit hubs - they expect him to run for the county line," Victoria deduced, tapping the marker against a isolated commercial sector near the old rail yards. "Marco knows the Vance brothers have access to intermodal manifests. So he bought the bus ticket as a decoy to draw Ray's crew to the terminal, while he doubles back to a short-term secure position."

Time to intercept window = current time (12:05) -> Decoy Bus departure (21:00)

"We have roughly eight hours before Ray realizes the bus terminal is a ghost chase," Alan noted, his jaw setting tight. "Which means Marco is currently sitting in a temporary safe house on the Southside, thinking he's bought himself time."
"And if we track his physical footprint before Ray's enforcers recover from the false lead," Victoria added, "we secure our primary witness intact."
The Southside Search Pattern
Twenty minutes later, Victoria's unmarked unit cut through the thick midday heat of Sector 4. The Southside was a maze of sprawling auto-body shops, rusted distribution centers, and low-slung industrial brick complexes. The air smelled of asphalt, diesel exhaust, and baked earth.
Alan navigated while Victoria analyzed the live cellular tower pings being fed directly from the precinct's intelligence unit.
"The burner phone pinged off a cell site near 4th and Presa," Alan reported, his eyes sweeping the street layout. "That narrows our search radius to a four-block industrial zone."
"Look for structural characteristics," Victoria instructed, her eyes systematically scanning the passing buildings. "Marco needs three specific parameters for a temporary safe house: dual exit points, elevated sightlines to monitor approaching traffic, and low civilian foot density so he isn't reported as a trespasser."
She slowed the car as they turned onto a quiet, dead-end spur behind a defunct cold-storage facility. The windows were heavy, reinforced glass covered in decades of grime, but on the second floor, a single frame had been recently wiped clean from the inside.
Alan caught it instantly. "Second floor. Corner window. Fresh wipe marks on the glass."
"He's inside," Victoria confirmed quietly, pulling the sedan out of direct sight behind a rows of disused shipping containers.

They exited the vehicle without slamming the doors, the metallic click of their holsters unlocking simultaneously. Victoria pulled her tactical gloves tight over her hands, feeling the familiar, grounding tension take over.
TACTICAL ADVISORY: Target is highly paranoid, potentially armed, and actively fleeing a hit squad. Approach requires zero verbal cues to avoid triggering a violent flight response.

They moved up the rusted exterior fire escape, their boots landing silently on the steel treads. Alan took point at the heavy metal access door, his hand resting on the reinforced handle, while Victoria covered the blind corner with her sidearm held in a low-ready stance.
Alan held up three fingers... two... one...
He turned the handle with a sharp, forceful torque and pushed the heavy door open.
The air inside the upper floor was stifling and thick with the smell of stale coffee and damp concrete. Sunlight cut through the high windows in narrow, dust-filled beams.
"Marco Villanueva!" Victoria's voice echoed through the vast, open space, authoritative and calm. "Police! Keep your hands visible!"
At the far end of the floor, near a makeshift cot, a shadow bolted upright. Marco - gaunt, hyperventilating, his dark hair matted with sweat - instantly reached toward a dark nylon bag resting on the floor.
"Don't do it, Marco!" Alan shouted, bringing his weapon up in a structured frame. "Ray Vance's crew is scouring the bus terminal right now. We are the only thing standing between you and an execution squad!"
Marco froze, his hand hovering inches from the zipper of the bag. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with exhaustion. "You... you don't understand," he rasped, his voice cracking under intense panic. "They aren't just going to kill me. They're wiping out everyone connected to the manifest leaks!"
Victoria took two deliberate, unhurried steps forward, keeping her posture non-threatening but completely commanding. "We know about Ray Vance. We know about the AISI 304 steel dust, the Kevlar-weave glove transfers, and the shared offshore routing accounts Julian Rivas was using. The forensic physical evidence is already logged, Marco. But we need your testimony to seal the warrant before Ray finds this building."
Marco looked at Victoria, his chest heaving as the weight of her words landed. The hyper-specific forensic details proved one thing: the police weren't guessing anymore. They had the system mapped.
Slowly, painfully, Marco raised both hands into the clear air, stepping away from the bag. "They murdered Julian... because he was going to turn over the master manifest."
Alan moved in quickly, securing Marco's wrists in steel cuffs with a crisp, double-click sound, while Victoria immediately swept the nylon bag, securing a heavy encrypted drive and a loaded 9mm handgun.
"We've got him," Alan said, looking across the space at Victoria.
Victoria glanced at her watch - 14:15 hours. They had pulled Marco off the grid nearly seven hours before his decoy bus was set to leave.
"Call in a secure transport unit, Alan," Victoria said, her focus already shifting to the next operational phase. "We're taking him straight to an off-site interrogation room. It's time to break open the Lucetti network."
