"Your assignment for tonight is to read pages 568 to 577. Write a one page summary on what you read. I except that summary on my desk at the beginning of class," Mr. Dickson told us. "You may start that assignment now."

I opened my history textbook to the right page. We were supposed to be reading about the Mexican American war.

It was the last period I had for the day. I couldn't wait for the bell to ring. I had been daydreaming about the dog after lunch. What will it be? Will it be a Great Dane? Or maybe a Dalmatian. Maybe it's even a Doberman.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

I gathered my stuff and rushed out the door before anyone else. I stopped at my locker. I left the things I didn't need and then grabbed the things I'd need. Then I made my way towards the exit. I was almost out when I heard my name being called.

"Hey! Hey, Jade."

I turned around to see a tall guy running towards me.

"You're Jade right?" He asked me as soon as he caught up to me.

He was tall; probably 6'2. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. He was probably on the lacrosse team. Maybe he was also popular. I disliked him right away even though I didn't know him. Feeling like that made me feel like a terrible person.

I nod. "Yes I'm Jade," I said in a quiet voice.

"You dropped your book," he said handing me a book I had never seen in my life.

"My book?" I asked him puzzled.

"Yeah it has your name on the first page," he said wondering if he had made some mistake.

He opened the first page then showed me. On the bottom right hand corner was my name. The only weird thing about it was that I didn't own that book and the way my name was written was totally different from my signature.

I just went with it, though. "Oh right. My book. Thank you. I didn't even notice it falling."

He smiled and extended his hand. "I'm Nick."

I returned his smile and shook his hand. "Jade," I said. Then I remembered that he already knew that. "Er... the new girl," I quickly corrected.

"Oh you're the new girl? Nice meeting you." I had totally misjudged this guy. He seemed nice.

We started walking towards the exit. By then the hallways had emptied.

"Yeah it's my second day here, but... um... I have to go," I say awkwardly.

"Right... of course... End of the day. Time to go home. Home sweet home."

His last statement left me speechless. A home is where a family lives. It's full of love and sweets. Home used to be a happy place for me. Now it's just a place where I sleep.

"I'm sorry did I say something wrong," Nick asked me.

"No it's not you," I reply. By then we had gone through the front doors. I saw Susan waiting in the car. I waved at her then signaled her to wait a minute.

Nick frowned. "Well I hope to see you around."

"Yeah I'll see ya tomorrow."

He walked towards his car while I took my separate path. Susan was in the drivers seat smiling from ear to ear.

"Hey, Susan, I'm sorry I'm late," I say.

"Don't worry about. I see you had a great day," she replied eyeing in the direction Nick had gone.
