I laugh. A real big laugh. Can this day get any weirder?
"What kind of drugs are you on. And who sold it to you. I'd like to get some of it," I joke.
They both took me seriously though.
I had to correct my mistake. "I don't take drugs. I was just joking."
"You don't believe us," Nick said. It was more of a statement than a question.
"How can you think that I will believe you? I've never even heard of shifters before in my life before today," I say still with a little humor in my voice.
Nick looked at me with a piteous smile.
"Your mother was supposed to tell you everything when you turned fifteen," Nick said softly. He knew what had happened to her and my dad. I could see it in his face and eyes.
My fists clenched into fists on instinct. "She wasn't with me when I turned fifteen," I reply. I try to relax my fists but I can't seem to do it.
Nick nods but Terry keeps looking at me with a curious expression.
"What do you mean she wasn't with you?" He asks. Nick gave him a look that only translated to 'be quiet'. "I thought human parents live with their child until the child is ready to live a life of their own, or something like that," Terry continued ignoring Nick's deathly stare.
I didn't speak for a moment. If I had spoken I was sure that tears would flood my face and someone would get a bloody nose. After my last school, I had desperately tried to get my anger controlled. I somehow managed to calm some of it down but every once in awhile my instincts would kick in and I would punch somebody.
"Lets not talk about this right now," Nick says looking at me.
I do my breathing exercises. I breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. I inhale for six seconds and exhale for five.
Terry sees my expression and decides to drop it.
"I guess you don't talk much about it?" He said with a questioning tone.
I shook my head.
"Did I touch a soft nerve?" He asks.
I almost laugh at his choice of words. "No... I just...don't want to talk about it," I lie.
"Well you ar—," Terry starts but gets interrupted by Nick.
"You're a shifter and the next mayor of Dreadville," he says.
I laugh. "If you think I'll leave my whole life behind on Earth, you're crazy," I tell him.
"You're telling me that I'm crazy. I'm not the one seeing things that a sane person wouldn't see. I also don't think that whatever you were living on Earth was a life," Nick replies.
I punch him on the shoulder. I totally meant to do that and I don't feel regret. His other arms shoots up to massage the pain.
Terry makes a move to stop me from hurting Nick any more but then I accidentally punch him in the jaw. That punch was totally accidental and it actually made me feel remorseful.
Terry makes noises that I've never heard in my life and my face starts burning. I need to apologize but my voice has fails. I open my mouth but nothing comes out.
"The heck was that for," Nick asks me as he grabs Terry by the arm and tugs him towards him. They start looking at me as if I'm a wild animal that needs to be contained. Which they have no right to be looking at me that way considering that Terry can change into a cat.
