I smiled up at him. This is my mate. Finally.
Something flashed in his eyes. Without a word he yanked his hand away then turned back around the corner, leaving me alone in the hallway.

Thirty-Eight
I stifled a gasp at the sight in front of me. James' beautiful home was abandoned and a mess. The lawn was overgrown, the overgrowth had climbed up the base of the foundation of the white brick mansion. Windows were splintered or missing all together, the garage had been left wide open, and the lit gold sconces on either side of the front door blinked lazily, ready to give out at any given moment.
The car rolled to a stop and my door was pulled open before I could unglue my focus from the house. James stood there patiently waiting with the door ajar, searching my face with his own devoid of anything. Well, I guess somethings did not change. I climbed out and he closed the door behind me just as Eva pulled up behind us and was outside in a flash.
"I'm surprised Julie didn't have the place fixed up before you got here," she said to James, pushing her big round sunglasses from her nose to the top of her head.
"She would've. But I gave strict instructions for her not to set foot inside the house until we had it searched." He answered smoothly heading for the door.
After his display of emotion at the hospital I thought that there had finally been a breakthrough in our relationship as new mates. Or as allies, as I had once offered. But that thought had been quickly squashed when he'd reverted to giving me the cold shoulder as if I were a stranger in his presence once again.
Once Tami was stable enough to be left alone, Mike had stayed behind to keep an eye on the nurses who began asking too many alarming questions about her health and how the slit in her wrist happened. James had stormed out of the room and I followed after him, following him into the waiting room.
"What's wrong?" I asked him, trying to catch up.
"I need some air," was all he said before walking through the sliding doors. I followed.
"James, I can sense your fury. Which is something that never happens. I can usually just tell you're pissed about something by the look on your face." Our emotions were sensible and if we didn't keep them hidden, they could be used against us.
We stood on the sidewalk now and he whirled around to face me. "Fine," he spat. "My anger is toward you. I'm angry you planted yourself in the arms of the Rogues back at the cave, leaving me scrambling to get you back!"
My brows furrowed. "But that was my plan. We'd agreed on it."
He shook his head. "And after I told you I couldn't go through with it you did everything in your power to make sure they left with you. Don't think I forgot you threw that Rogue in my way."
