Don't Wanna Go Back

"So, your mother passed away. Where is your dad?" I asked as we walked away from the train station. Ed was further ahead of us, in search of somewhere to eat. "Our father left when we were younger. Mom told him she would wait for him, but she got really sick, and then she died. She was still waiting on him, even when she took her last breath," he replied sadly. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to intrude on your personal life, really I don't. I just feel that if I know more about you, it will help me understand you guys and the way you are. If I upset you or make you uncomfortable with my questions, just tell me to shut up. I won't ask anything else," I said softly, twirling a loose strand of hair around my finger. "It's fine," Al chirped. "It's actually kind of nice to have someone to talk to. Thank you." I looked up at him with surprise. "For what?" I responded. He looked down at me, and the light I saw in his "eyes", his soul, was so bright and pure. "For being a friend," he answered. I shoved him playfully but didn't say anything. I turned away from him, hiding my smile.

'Any hint we get toward finding the Philosopher's Stone always leads us to an abandoned building or the woods. It's always the damn woods,' I thought as we walked through the dense forest. Lillith and Al were going on about something. I wasn't really paying attention to their conversation. "Isn't that right, Brother?" Al called over his shoulder, snapping me out of my mental ramblings. "Huh? What?" I responded, confused. "We were having a debate on which was shorter: your height or your temper. Al says it's your temper," she taunted, smiling innocently. "We were not!" Al exclaimed. "Why, you--" She burst into a fit of giggles as I approached her. "I'm not scared of you," she smirked. "OF COURSE I'M SCARY!" I shouted. "AND I'M NOT SHORT! I AM NORMAL HEIGHT, EVERYONE ELSE IS JUST HUGE!!!" She narrowed her eyes at me, her ears twitching. "Shut up," she whispered. "Shut up?" I roared, getting even louder. "I said, shut up!" she hissed. A fraction of a second later, she rammed into me, knocking me to the ground. Two long spears shot past where I was standing just a moment before. Lillith was lying beside me, glaring furiously. "I told you to shut up!" she growled.

"We keep meeting like this, Fullmetal. It really is amusing," a low, sultry voice called from the shadows of the forest. "Lust," I sneered, quickly getting back on my feet. "You're going to help us one way or another, and you're coming with me. Even if it means that I bring you in a little damaged," she said as the spears shot from the darkness again. I clapped my hands together and pressed them against a nearby tree. Bark shot from the tree trunk and twisted around her arms, holding her in place. "Run!" I shouted at Al and Lillith. Al stepped forward and drew a transmutation circle in the dirt. When he touched it, a large column shot up from the ground a few hundred feet away, sending Lust into the air. The bark broke from around her hands and she retracted her spears, landing gracefully in front of us. "Bravo, Alphonse. That was good, but it will take more than that to kill me, unlike you. I just have to hit that seal once and you're gone," she smirked. Before I could blink, she had knocked his helmet off with one of her spears, and another spear was aimed at his blood seal. Everything that happened next was a blur. She was going to kill Al, but suddenly Lillith was a crumpled heap on the ground where Alphonse was standing, and Al was on the ground, scrambling to grab his helmet.

I clapped my hands and slammed them against the ground. The dirt became hard and solid, wrapping around the homunculus. She was covered up to her neck. "Let's go," I said, starting to take off through the woods. I heard the metal clanging of Al's footsteps and I glanced over my shoulder. He was holding Lillith close to his chest, and she was bleeding badly. "We need to take her to a hospital," he whimpered. He stared down at her limp, fragile form in silence. We finally reached a local hospital. "She needs help. Now," Al cried, handing her over to a couple nurses. They laid her on a gurney and wheeled her away. "What now?" Al asked. "We leave her here. She's safer that way," I sighed. If she stayed with us, she would only get hurt worse, and I didn't want anyone in danger because of me. He glanced in the direction they had carried her before following me outside. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

I woke up in a white room, the smell of bleach filling my nostrils. Looking around, I realized that I was in a hospital. "How are you feeling, dear?" a woman asked. She was sitting next to my bed, smiling at me. "I'm fine," I replied hesitantly. "How did I get here?" The woman stood and opened the curtains, letting sunlight filter into the already bright room. "Two boys dropped you off. You were losing a lot of blood," she explained. "Two boys," I mumbled. "Where are they?" The woman gave me a look of pity and replied, "I'm not sure, dear. They brought you here and then left." I pounded my fists against the mattress as hard as I could. I was furious. "Those bastards!" I shouted. The woman flinched at my outburst. "Um, ma'am? There are people here who want to take you with them. They say you're a chimera, which you obviously are," she said softly. "Wait, are they military?" I asked. She made a very unpleasant face and nodded. "No, I can't go with them!" I cried, jumping out of the bed. I felt a sharp pain in my side, but I ignored it.

"Hey, where are you going?" she asked. "Away," I replied, grabbing my clothes from a bag in the corner. I heard voices in the hallway; they were talking about me. "M-ma'am, I'm sorry, but I-I can't allow you to leave," she stammered as she ran toward the door. I jumped out of the window and took off running. I let my instincts take over, running on all fours as fast as possible. I was long gone before the military men even got to the room.
