Chapter 9
It didn't take long for us to finish renovating the cafe since there were a lot of us working on it. I basically went there to paint the mural every chance I got since I loved painting. Everyone really loved the mural. They were constantly complimenting Dad and Matt, and asked if they got a professional painter.
I really loved the mural. I definitely thought it was my best work.
Everyone was working at the cafe today, except for me, because I would rather not socialize with people. The only job I had at the cafe was decorating the baked goods, but Massey was doing that right now.
I was sitting at a table in the corner, working on a random sketch, when Massey sat down across from me. "I need you to take over for me," she said.
"Sorry, but no," I said. "It's your job today, not mine."
"Please?" she asked. "There's a really cute boy that wants to hang out with me, so I only need you to take over for an hour or so."
"No," I said.
"Why are you being so selfish?" she asked in a whiny voice.
"I'm not being selfish," I said. "I do so much for you. When was the last time you did anything for me?" She didn't reply. "Exactly. Look, I'm sorry for not wanting to take over for the day, but I'm currently working on a sketch and I'd rather do that than take over your job."
Massey huffed. "Jerk."
"Thanks," I said sarcastically. I then realized exactly what I was sketching, so I quickly turned over to a new page. I doubt Massey would be happy to find out that I was sketching her best friend. She would be even more mad if she found out I liked Katie.
"So, you're working on a sketch that you would rather do than cover my shift," she said. "Yet, you flip to a new page? You really are selfish."
"Not as selfish as you," I said. "Massey, I don't feel like working today. You need to stop using me to get out of every single thing."
"Fine," she said. "But if you ever want me to do anything, I won't."
"You don't any," I said as she got up and walked away.
I sighed and went back to sketch of Katie. I didn't even realize I was sketching her. Sometimes, I just drew freely without a single thought.
Tyler then sat across from me. "I'm surprised you were able to deny taking Massey's shift," he said. "Usually, you'll do anything for your twin sister."
"Yeah, but I'm still kind of mad that she caused us to get into a paint fight on my first day of school," I said. "I got way too many looks that day and it...." I shook my head. "She does think about her stuff too much and thinks she can get away with anything."
"It looks to me like she does," Tyler said, looking at something. I followed his gaze to see Massey sitting at a table, talking to a boy. "So either she found someone to cover her shift, or she's taking a self-issued break."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "There isn't such thing as a self-issued break."
"For Massey there is," Tyler said.
I sighed and closed my sketchbook. "I'm going to go check if the kitchen needs any help." I put my sketchbook in my backpack and went to the kitchen, seeing Katie working there.
I dropped my backpack on the floor and she looked at me. "Massey asked me to cover for her," she said. "I couldn't say no. The only problem is I have no idea what I'm doing."
"I'll take over," I said.
"Are you sure?" Katie asked. "Because Massey told me that you refused to take her shift."
"I know," I said. "But it's not fair for you to work here when I can tell you'd rather not."
Katie smiled. "Thank you, Jeremy. You're a lifesaver." She gave me a quick hug before leaving the kitchen.
I was a bit stunned because Katie normally didn't hug me, but I quickly snapped out of it and went to work.
When Massey came back, she saw me and scoffed. "So you won't cover for me, but you'll cover for Katie?" she asked.
"Katie doesn't even work here," I said. "She didn't know what to do, so I took over. But now that you're back...."
"Actually, I'm going out," she said.
"No, you're not," I said. "This is your job, Massey. You can't just skip out on it."
"Jeremy's right," Dad finally spoke up. "I let you get away with Katie taking over your shift. You're not leaving."
"But Dad!" Massey whined. "That's not fair!"
"Get over it," Dad said. "Look, Matt is working on hiring some other bakers and waiters, but until then, you're going to have to take every shift I give you. And you know what sucks about me being your boss?"
"You can fire me?" she asked. "Please do."
"No, but I can ground you," Dad said. "Now get back to work."
