Chapter 13
Today was the day I wasn't looking for; the art presentation. I already knew I didn't have to say anything during the presentation because of my selective mutism, but I didn't kow if I would have to stand up in front of the class as well. I did not want all the attention on me with people wondering why I wasn'y saying a single thing.
Hopefully Mrs. Jeffrey would let me just stay in my seat. Hopefully Massey would let me stay in my seat. Then again, she loved attention and all eyes being on her so I was sure she would be completely fine with everyone looking at only her.
While we were in art class waiting for it to start, Massey would tell I was getting nervous even though I wasn't really showing it. "What are you so nervous about?" Massey asked. "You're not going to be talking anyway."
"I know but everyone will be looking at me anyway and I don't know if I can handle that," I said. "I hate attention."
Massey didn't reply. She just stood up and walked over to Mrs. Jeffrey. After a short conversation, she came back and sat down beside me. "Mrs. Jeffrey said you can just stay in your seat and I could present alone," she said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Obviously. That's why I said it. Seriously, you're a genius but at times you don't even use your brain."
"Well, sometimes I want to get on your level but I can't if I use my brain all the time."
Massey glared at me and punched my arm, which actually hurt quite a bit. I wasn't going to lie; she was a lot stronger than me.
When the second bell rang, Mrs. Jeffrey stood up from her desk to the get the presentations started as soon as possible. "Alright, I hope everyone is prepared for today," she said. "Would anyone like to present first?"
Massey quickly raised her hand, which wasn't suprising at all. It was weird that she hated homework and hated anything school related but once presentations came around, she loved it. She would hate the work to prepare for it but when it came to presenting it, she was all for it.
She really loved being the centre of attention.
"Alright, Massey," Mrs. Jeffrey said, so Massey carefully picked up our sculpture and brought it to the front of the class, setting it down so everyone could see it.
"So I'm Massey like you all know because who doesn't know me?" Massey said and I tried my hardest not to roll my eyes. "My partner for the project is Jeremy but he lost his voice and can't talk so I'm doing all the presenting. Anyway, we made a yin and yang symbol because we are probably as different as people come. He's an art and music prodigy, and I'm more into sports. He's a certified genius and I'm stupid. I love fashion and his fashion sense... Well, it's okay. Nothing special."
She never hesitated to take a shot at me at any given time.
"And since yin and yang is too lame to do, I suggested we make those little dots in a fetus instead because Jeremy and I are twins and shared a womb together. I wanted to make a womb but apparently, that was too easy so we technically made a yin and yang womb. Anyway, this whole sculpture basically means that all though we are twins, we are very different. The end."
Everyone applauded as Massey took the sculpture and sat back down beside me. "Very well done, Massey and Jeremy," Mrs. Jeffrey said. "However, in the future, please refrain from putting yourself down in the middle of the presentation. Nobody is stupid. Everyone just has a different way of holding information."
That was Mrs. Jerffrey for you. She always saw the good in everyone and rarely thought anyone could have a negative personality trait. Literally nobody could be a poor artist or stupid in her eyes.
"It's not putting myself down if it's true," Massey said.
Mrs. Jeffrey just sighed before asking if anyone wanted to go next. After nobody volunteered, she chose a random pair.
All the presentations finished quite quickly since Mrs. Jeffrey didn't expect everyone to be up there for a long time going into depth about the sculptures. She just wanted the best explanation we could muster up since a lot of pairs did something simple like a book or some type of sports equipment.
Since there was still a lot of time left before class ended and we didn't have any upcoming projects yet, Mrs. Jeffrey let us do whatever we wanted in our free time. As long as it was legal. Her words.
Literally what could someone illegally do in a classroom?
I decided to pull out my sketchbook to work on one of my many sketches. Massey left her seat and went back to sitting in her normal spot with her friends. I definitely didn't mind. She was too annoying at times.
Or all the time.
Someone did end up sitting beside me anyway, so I looked over to see Katie. "Hey," she said, giving me a smile. "I hope you don't mind me sitting here. Massey is annoying me right now."
"I don't mind," I said. "I know what it's like to be annoyed by Massey, trust me. What's she doing that annoys you?"
"She keeps telling me I should go out with Brad," Katie said.
"Brad," I repeated with a clear amount of venom in my voice that I didn't mean to have at all. "Such a charming guy."
"If by charming you mean annoying and conceited, then yes, very," Katie said. "Massey's only thinking about his looks. I'm not. I would much rather date someone... well, let's just say the complete opposite of Brad. So are you going on the field trip for this class next week?"
Mrs. Jeffrey thought it would be fun to go on a field trip in the outdoors. In a forest. To do a scavenger hunt.
I didn't know what that had to do with art, but I was all for it.
"Or definitely," I said. "It gets me out of the class where my teacher is constantly trying to get me to speak in class even though he knows I can't. Literally. My parents talked to him, gave him a doctor's note, and Karen keeps reminding him I can't."
"Ugh, sounds like something Mr. Jacobs would do," Katie said.
"And that's exactly who it is," I said.
"No surprise there."
