I always wondered what would happen if I didn’t have Caitlin. I would probably be dead. When I was in grade 5, I had recently gotten a Georges puppy for my birthday. She was a Pomeranian and her name was “ILY”. I was totally in love with my new baby, I took her every were I went. Coming to the end of the year, our school held a Christmas carol night. ILY snuck into the car without me noticing, but my mother, who also was totally in love with her let her come. After my performance at the Christmas carols, I held ILY tight with crowds around her saying how cute she was, and some arrogant man, my brother’s best friend’s dad, said she would be the snack of the evening. My friend Ellen said

“You know that fireworks are coming”

I loved fireworks and just smiled, not thinking, ILY was the first dog I’ve ever had and I didn’t know that bringing her to fireworks could scare the life out of her.

As soon as the fireworks started, ily’s pupils grew in shock. She whined and cried, struggling to get out of my arms. Ellen was crying, so was I, and we were both trying to keep her in my arms. Eventually she managed to jump out, I run faster than I knew I could after her, but she was too fast. Ellen was running after me like a good friend would. My shoes were too fancy to run properly with so I flicked them off and my cardigan too and continued to run my heart out until I got to the main road and I heard skids of cars that could only be ILY. Ellen had gone back with my shoes and cardigan to tell my mum and Caitlin about what had happen. Immediately Caitlin ran after me, I was breaking down on the side of the road, feeling suicidal, tying to run after my baby in a very busy road. Then I saw bright lights and then the friendly touch of Caitlin pushing me out of the way of a great big car. My grade 5 teacher came after me too. Caitlin was crying as well but she couldn’t be heard because I was wailing my eyes out, screaming.

“It’s ok, we are going to find her, even if it takes us all night” she whispered words of comfort.

“I love you Caitlin” I replied

“I love you too bub” she said, ending the conversation.

Mum came and picked me up and Ellen and Caitlin went home to complete their sleep over. Mum and I were searching everywhere we could think of to find ruby, then my phone rang.

“Hi Ellen” I sobbed

“Grace, Caitlin and I were just taking your shoes and bomber jacket home and ILY has run all the way back to your house”

“Oh, thank god” I was tearing up again.

I told mum and we sped home. I say ruby and I was just so happy. I cried with her in my arms. I spent the whole night just looking at her outside as she slept, walked around the back yard and kissed my face off. Caitlin and I now both have a phobia of fireworks because they nearly killed us and ILY.

Thank god for Caitlin and Ellen, it’s amazing how friend ship can save your life.
