Chapter 5 –
We played songs from 2010 -2011 instead of all the latest hits. We treated everyone the same.
“Oh my god, do remember this song?” Ellen said then blasting the speakers as she played the song “take your shirt off” by T-pain. We loved this song in grade 6. I remember, Lucas used to be the best dancer I had ever seen. When this song started playing he would start crumping. We had this routine thingy and we would thrust our arms from side to side and then pull our shirt up. Fun.
“Wow, it’s been a while since I have heard this song” Caitlin remembered.
Before I knew, the boys, 21 year old men really, were up of the coffee table dancing like they used to.
“What’s all this” nick came through the door with a few off his mates. Tia simply ran up to him and stuffed a bunch of popcorn and chips in his face.
“Hi” she said casually like throwing popcorn and Doritos in some ones face was something everyone does. I laughed so hard and hid my face in to Caitlin’s shoulder; she covered her mouth and laughed with me.
“Hello Tia” he grunted, but with a smile.
“Umm… everyone, this is matt and Luke” nick said introducing his friends that walked behind him. Matt was the waiter from Kicos. He had long gelled up blonde hair, blue eyes and a generous amount of freckles.
“Hey, I know you 2” he said, pointing to Caitlin and me. I felt so awkward.
“Yer, you served us today” Caitlin said happily.
“That’s right” he replied.
“Caitlin” Caitlin shook his hand
“And this is grace” Caitlin presented me with her hands.
“yer, good to meet ya” he said shaking my hand.
“Good to meet you too” I said, not sincere at all.
“Well I’m gonna go wash the popcorn out of my ears” nick said clapping his hands together and walking off awkwardly to the small bathroom in the corridor. After what seemed to be years of awkward silence Ellen put the music back on and started talking to Tia and before you know it, the whole group is involved with the conversation and Tia was as loud as I remember her.
“Youz hungry” Caitlin asked. She was an amazing cook and there was no way she would just serve us maccas. She came on to the table with a chicken marinating in a bunch of herbs and vegetables. We ate the delicious bird and were satisfied, until Caitlin said
“You ready for dessert?”
She went to the kitchen and came back with stack of 13 pancakes, her favorite number was 13. To add a little of herself into the pancakes she died them blue and ever second pancake was died green. I remember in grade 5, Caitlin and I made a cooking show with our laptop and made blue pancakes toffee. We both have scars on our fingers now from that deadly toffee. I haven’t made toffee since.
Caitlin smothered the pancakes in cream, maple syrup and berries.
“That was amazing KT” nick said, nick and I gave her a nick name in grade 5 and we would call her KT. We still do.
“Thanks bro” she said like the complement was nothing.
“It was really good KT” I said to accompany the complements she had already received.
“I’m glad you liked it bub” she said kindly.
“I’m gonna give the leftover chicken to the dogs” I shared with the group
ILY looked like she already knew what I said, jumping up and down.
“Give some to Jed Jed too” nick complained
“I will” I said in the whiny voice he just used.
I went outside and fed the happy dogs.
“Guess what I rented from video easy” Lucas said, with extreme excitement
“What” Ellen said on behalf of all of us?
“Disaster movie” he said holding up our group’s favorite movie.
“Oh my gosh I haven’t seen this movie for about 8 years” Caitlin said observing the familiar DVD case.
“Well let’s watch it” Tia said
For the rest of the evening we were dancing, replaying lines from the movie, playing karaoke and above all, laughing and making fun of Tia, just like the good old days.
