Year 7 was a hard year. I lived my first year without my mother and all my friends in Darwin with my dad, Caitlin was home alone most of the time and the only company she had was her dog. Lucas got bullied by year 8’s. Alex was always really shy and didn’t make friends and his father had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, he really needed friends for support, Tia moved away as well, an hour drive and so she only had her parents who were alcoholics. Ellen was the only child and didn’t have the company and friendship she needed. Yes year 7 was a hard year for all of us. I remember getting a call from Caitlin, at the start I was so happy to hear her voice but when she told me luucas was in hospital I bursted in to tears, lucas had been severly hurt in a fight at school. school holidays was only a week away so I booked a flight with mum to go visit everyone, especially lucas. When I saw him lying on the hospital bed, he had tubes running through his nose and his leg bandaged hanging from the celing. He was sleeping, the whole group was sitting by his bed, including his histerical mother. One of the nurses went in and woke him up.
“I’m just going to check your heart rate” the nurse said sweetly to lucas as his sleep was disturbed.
“lucas, its me” I said sobbing
“hey Grace, what are you doing here?” he asked confused
“I’ve come to visit you” I answered
“every one is here” ellen said holding his hand
“Oh, wow, thanks guys” he sounded shocked
Lucas looked so innocent and I didn’t understand why any one would hurt such a kind boy.
“what happened” I asked Caitlin, not really wanting an aswer
“he didn’t take the drugs” Caitlin said sadly
“he got beaten for being a woos” ellen furtherly explained
I was devastated and confused, why would a year 7 take drugs.
“he’ll be ok” the nurse assured us
Within 2 and a half weeks he was home from the hospital, but the boys who had hurt lucas were expelled from the school, however lucas stayed at the school. I spent my school holidays at the hospital.
