one; I "Love" Bubble Wrap

The warm weather of early August causes sweat beads to form above my eyebrows and above my mouth.

I pant and unhitch the trailer, revealing my bay mare Aqua. Her back hoof is cocked, telling me that she is napping, "Hey girl," I coo. Her fuzzy ear flicks back at me and she nickers loudly, causing me to laugh, "sleep well?" She bobs her head in response. I swear this horse can understand humans.

I attach her yellow lead line to her leather halter and make a kissy noise with my mouth as she eagerly walks backwards to get out of the crammed trailer. I hear footsteps and hope to find my dad who has disappeared to sign in but instead I find a girl my age walking towards me with a bored expression on her face.

"Ms. Doedwire told me to come give you a tour," she scans me up and down and does the same to Aqua, who has begun eating strands of hay from the gravel road.

"Thanks, but whose Ms. Doedwire?" I ask. The girl only rolls her eyes and mutters something under her breath, "Huh?" I question.

She fakes a smile, "Someone from the dorms that you'll be staying in." She clenches her fists, "Follow. Me." She finishes through gritted teeth.

I shake my head and hands, "Thank you but it's quite alright. I'm waiting for my dad and we need to put my horse Aqua away in the barn." I politely turn down her... uhm... kind offer.

She flicks her stick straight hair around and storms off, obviously annoyed. I pet Aqua's neck, "I hope not everyone is as fake as her!" I laugh.

As if on cue my dad walks right past the girl and smiles at her. Judging by his reaction I don't think she smiled back, "What's up with that girl?" He asks, confused,

"She told me to follow her for a tour but I said I couldn't cause I had to wait for you and put Aqua away." I ramble.

He laughs and hands me my schedule and a map of the whole place. The map is huge and there are so many paddocks and pens for the horses behind the stable, "Woah! Look at all of the paddocks!" I yell mostly to myself, almost forgetting that my dad is still here.

He peers over my shoulder and at the map. Judging by his expression, I don't think he understands the map. I laugh at his confusion and look at my schedule. I have math, science, English, history (all of the tradition classes), and intro to equine studies. I nod my head and look at my teachers' names.

On top of my schedule is my dorm room number and what my dorm is called. It reads, Cherryhill Dormitory.

I look back at the map and see that the dorms are at the other side of the barn, allowing me to put Aqua away and then head to the rooms, "Dad," I begin, "the dorms are at the other side of the stable, can you grab some boxes and I will meet you there after I put her away?" I gesture to Aqua, whose ears are pricked forward as she takes in her new surroundings.

He nods and walks back to the car, leaving me alone with Aqua, "Come on girl," I whisper, "lets go to the stable." again, she bobs her head. Yup, she can defiantly understand me.

Mysterious Ocean- aka. Aqua, her golden nameplate read in a beautiful cursive print. I lead her in the massive stall, instantly surprised by how soft the bedding is. Aqua heads straights to the hay on the back side of the wall, causing me to laugh.

"Soooo funny," a voice spits from behind me. How is it that already I know who it is? And that I know I'm dreading it too,

"Yes?" I manage to spit out through gritted teeth, causing her to smirk,

"By the way," she begins, "my name is Peyton."

"Oh! Well in that case my name is-" I begin, dumbly thinking that we were going to become best friends... I was wrong,

"Like I care," she holds up a perfectly manicured hand, "I'm just telling you mine so that you know that it's me when the speakers at the shows say that I won champion in every division," she smirks and flicks her hair around, gesturing for me to follow her. After walking some stalls away from Aqua's, we reach a gorgeous dapple grey named Rio, "he's my champion, aren't you boy?" she snickers as he stomps his hoof proudly. I roll my eyes and walk away, practically feeling the daggers she's shooting at me with her cold hazel eyes.

Aqua's head is stuck out of the stall, and I quietly begin whispering to her, "I should probably go to the dorms, but I love you." she nickers quietly, as if returning the whisper. I nod and walk briskly past Peyton, who is braiding Rio's forelock.

By the time we checked into my dorm and brought all my boxes in, it was 4 o'clock. My roommate wasn't here yet, which might have been a good thing s that I could unpack in quietness. My dad knocks on the open door quietly, letting me know that he's coming in. I turn my head to find him holding another box, smaller than the rest, "I thought we brought them all in?" I casually ask and turn back to unpacking an folding clothes.

"Technically we did. I packed this one without you knowing." I turn my head back to him and tilt my head, "Here," he hands me the box. I open the cardboard flaps and see tons of bubble wrap,

"How'd you know?! I love bubble wrap!" I joke, earning a eye roll from him that turns into a laugh,

"Just open it!" He laughs. I smile and pull out the wrap, throwing it into the yellow trash bin that I packed.

Underneath all of the wrap is a small leather box, and I fear that I know what's inside. I open the lid of the tiny box and see a silver pin with a horse jumping over a horseshoe. I gasp at the tag, $200, "D-dad," I stutter, unsure what to say,

"Just... remember to call me..." he smiles weakly and walks out of the room, leaving me speechless. I smile brightly and run my finger over the cold metal. Maybe this year will be my best one, I assure myself. Heck, I already knew that. Right?

Woo I finished the first chapter! The picture above is Jasmine Ross. I edited it quite a lot and hope all equestrians and horse lovers enjoy it! This chapter is basically a filler and the others will be more "horsey" and DEFINITELY more drama-filled! Please leave a comment for improvement or just being nice. Hope you enjoy the first chapter of the first book of the "Fair Valley Preparatory Book Series"!
