Chapter 3; The Fight

Mia finished putting her top coat on her nails. Mine were a baby yellow and hers were mint.

Mia's tongue was stuck out, and her face is scrunched up like she's concentrating very hard, "I can't believe that school is tomorrow!" I say, breaking the silence.

Mia nods, blowing a strand of hair out of her face, "I know, it isn't fair! We just got here yesterday!" She agrees. I sigh and fling myself against the bed.

I slowly drift off to sleep before a harsh knock at the door awakens me. My head jolts up. Mia waves me off, "I got it," and I nod, laying back down. I hear the door open and then close shortly after, then footsteps. Mia throws a paper on my desk and sits on her bed, staring at me, "You got a letter," she says bluntly.

I open my eyes, "Really? Thanks,"

I know that she didn't think I saw, but I did. Just barely though. Out of the corner of my eye, she rolled her eyes. I pretended not to see and went over to where the envelope was sitting. It read, To Ms. Ross.

I shrugged and ripped it open, careful not to tear the paper inside. I unfolded it, and read the letter to myself,

Ross,

Hold your tongue next time I try to be nice. By the way, it won't happen again. Hope everything goes "smooth" for tryouts tomorrow...
-P

After rereading it multiple times to convince myself that this is real, I turn back to Mia. She is already sleeping, so I crumble up the paper and through it in the trash. Then, I set the alarm and go to sleep. Not sure what to expect for tomorrow... like a lamb to the slaughter...

My eyes flicker open, revealing the shiny dorm room that I now call home. Sunlight rays weakly shine through the closed blinds, and I turn to my side to check the time. 6:27. Three minutes before my alarm goes off. Knowing that I will never be able to fall back asleep in three minutes, I unplug the clock and try (yet fail) to get out of bed quietly. Long story short, I end up on my face. I groggily get up and walk over to the bathroom with my clothes in hand.

The steaming hot water of the shower trickled down my back and onto my bare feet. It felt so good to wash out the nightmares of Peyton and the letter, and swirling down the drain.

I could hear Mia stir just a bit, and decided to get out of the shower.

I slipped on some flowy shorts and a floral shirt. Then I curled the ends of my hair and pinned some back with a bobby pin. Now time for makeup.

I put a little bit of blush and concealer, then adding my mascara. After that I dabbed on some pink lip gloss and observed myself in the mirror.

After I was satisfied with my appearance, I slipped on some wedges to add to my height and walk out the door. Mia's bed is now empty, and the bathroom on her side of the room is shut with light peeking out from under the door.

I walk up to the door and softly knock, "Mia? What's up?" Click. The door locks. I sigh and grab my mahogany backpack, then head out the door. After walking down the hallway and out the main door, the early morning light blinds me. My heels click against the cobblestone oath as I head to the cafeteria.

When I open the door, only a few kids are in it. They are scattered around the huge room, maybe 20 or 30 kids. I walk casually over to the lunch line and grab a tray full of a healthy meal: an apple, orange juice, and an English muffin with butter. I find a table and plop my bag down, my mouth already watering from the meal. I take a small sip of juice to quench my thirst, then dig into my muffin. The soft bread melts in my mouth along with the tasty butter.
