"Ghosts seem harder to please than we are; it is as though they haunted for haunting's sake -- much as we relive, brood, and smoulder over our pasts."

- Elizabeth Bowen

Since Coraline was seven years old, She had the ability to see ghosts. She remembers seeing her first friend, it was a cold night that night. Cora's mother had sent her outside that evening to get her barbie doll from the porch swing they had and when she had went to go get it, Cora saw a little boy holding it. He was sobbing, stroking the dolls head and hugging it tightly.

"Hey.. Are you alright?" A young, Coraline had asked the little boy. She had slowly started to approach him.

The boy continued his cries as if what she said offended him. Cora reached forward with her small hands and touched him. It had seemed like her fingers went straight through him as if he wasn't there. The feeling was freezing.

"Woah you're cold! I can get you a cup of hot coco. My mommy makes it when im sad. Maybe it'll make you feel better?" Her seven year old self said to the little boy.

He sniffled, wiping his tears away. "Tha-That would be nice, my mommy used to fix me that but she moved away after I died."

Cora gave him a smile, extending her hand. The boy took it and they both walked inside. She led him into the kitchen.

"Hey mommy! I made a friend and he's reallyy cold! Can you make us a cup of hot coco pleaseee?"

Cora's mom turned around, from washing dishes. "What friend sweetie?" She had given her a confused and worried look.

"The one besi-" She started.

The little boy was gone.

"Wha- He was right beside me mommy! I promise you, I don't know where he went!"

Cora's mom had shaken her head.

"Come on lets get you to bed. I think someone had too much ice cream." She had picked her up and was already carrying Cora to her room.

"Mommy! He was crying and everything! I just wanted to make him feel better. I bet he ran off because he was shy." Cora tried to convince her.

She laid her down on my bed and covered her up. "No one was there, now go to bed!"

"But mom-" Cora immediately shut her seven year old mouth as soon as she gave Cora that look. It was a look she would be too familiar with for the next ten years of her life.

Cora's mother got up after tucking Cora in and left. She didn't even give her a goodnight kiss..

A few minutes later, Cora's door opened revealing Trevor. Her thirteen year old brother. He walked over and motioned Cora to scoot over and she did.
