Barely tipsy, Y/n stumbled out of the large house, making her way down the front steps. The music was so loud she could still hear it through the closed door, her ears ringing as she left the residency. The air outside was crisp, tickling Y/n's skin as a soft breeze blew through her hair. She took a deep breath in, the cool air serving a refreshing contrast to the sweaty heat encapsulating the party inside. The night was quiet, aside from the stray voices that littered the front of the house.
Y/n's friends had disappeared into the crowd, leaving her alone with a house full of strangers within minutes. She was glad to leave now, the sky welcoming into the depths of the darkness. A few lamps illuminated her path down the street; mansions guarded her as she walked. She paid little attention to their size, instead focusing on her phone, which displayed a map of the area. A brisk 20 minute walk would get her to the nearest bus stop.
Her heels clicked with every step, echoing among the eerie quiet of the neighborhood. It was way after midnight, the atmosphere nothing but ominous. Uneasiness settled in the pit of Y/n's stomach, and although there was no one around, the hairs on her arms pricked up, her eyes scanning her surroundings every now and then.
After a few minutes of walking, the back of Y/n's feet began to burn as the material of her heels drilled into her feet. Blisters had unmistakably already appeared, shooting pain down her heel and up the back of her leg. She sucked in a harsh breath, trying to ignore the ache, and continued walking.
The temperature suddenly dropped, the soft breeze turning into a harsher wind. Y/n squinted her eyes as she trudged forward.
"Jesus fucking christ," she groaned, looking down at her phone. She saw the droplets of water slide off the screen before she could feel them on her skin. She looked up, the rain revealing itself only beneath the glow of the streetlights. She could hear the thick water droplets tapping on the concrete, coating her arms as she walked. The rain was freezing despite the summer air, sending goosebumps along her wet skin.
Y/n walked faster, wrapping her arms around her upper body, trying to keep warm. Water dripped down her face, her hair already frizzy.
She got to the bus stop five minutes later. The drizzle had morphed into a harsh downpour, the rain drops slapping her skin as they hit. Y/n was beyond soaked, her white top nearly see through. She slumped down on the bench with a huff, covering her phone with the palm of her hand while she typed in the bus route number.
Next Bus Scheduled at: 4:03 am
Y/n nearly laughed when she saw the time. She'd have to wait one hour and twenty-six minutes until the next bus. However, she wasn't surprised there weren't any buses running at this time, after all the residents of the area rarely used the route, let alone in the middle of the night.
She quickly tapped off the pop up tab signaling she had 20% of her phone battery left, but the water gathered there made it nearly impossible to tap on anything on her phone. She huffed wiping the screen on her shirt, but it was no use. The fabric was already heaping wet, only smearing the water.
She was stuck.
In the middle of an unknown neighborhood, no ride, a nearly dead phone and a vicious thunderstorm brewing. It was dark, windy, and utterly unsafe for Y/n to stick around another hour waiting for the bus.
Y/n hunched over on the bench, soaked to the bone, thumb hovering over her contacts. She scrolled past a dozen names, most of which she wouldn't dare call. The few she might have once relied on were either asleep, at the party, or wouldn't care enough to drive out during a storm.
Her teeth were chattering now, her lips trembling–not from fear, but from the cold and the bitter aftertaste of being stranded. Her breath caught in her throat when she scrolled to a familiar name.
