EARLIER THAT SAME EVENING
We all sat silently in the dark limo as the gates of Sycamore Valley Ranch opened. It was supposed to be a small intimate dinner with friends. Only friends.
I can't believe this--this Alexandria! She completely weaseld her way into Michaels good graces. Fainting. Pfft! That bitch probably faked it as far as I'm concerned. Can't believe Michael was so easily fooled. He always trusted too easily! That'll be the death of him, his trusting heart.
It was so quiet when we finally parked at the main entrance of the estate. Alexandria shimmied across the leather seat making a squeaky flatulence sound. She glanced at Michael, locking eyes and the two dopes laughed like two 12 year olds! Humph. He never laughs with me anymore. He's always business business business. We've drifted so far apart from the friends that we used to be.
She may have his attention, for now. But I had a dinner party to throw and this new unexpected guest was not going to ruin it.
The driver opened the door all smiles with a goofy grin plastered on his face as he held out his hand to Alexandria. He's never helped me out of the car. Even when I was first hired! What a twit.
I had a call to make. I left the two giggling children at the front steps and walked away back towards the limousine. I couldn't let them accidentally overhear this call. I'm sure Michael would never forgive me.
I pulled out my DynaTac Motorola phone as I reached in my blazer pocket for the information I needed. I dialed the numbers and impatiently waited for the man to answer.
"Hello?" the man gruffly answered breathing hard into the receiver.
"It's me." I whispered as I watched Michael walk arm in arm with Alexandria towards the front door. "I need you to--to take matters into your own hands, like we talked about. Remember?"
There was a long silence and I heard a low chuckle as he replied, "sure Ms. Karen. Five thousand dollars seems like a bargain to take her off of your hands. Is it okay if I'm a bit...creative with her before I complete the assignment?"
I smiled watching Michael as he paraded her around. "Oh, you be as creative as you need to be. I want her scared and scared good. We'll be in touch, Mr. Patel."
