"Benalban," the old woman smiled to herself, "come now. It's surely past your bed time." The young girl was restless. Though she was dressed for sleep, she was sitting up on her wooden bed draped in animal furs giggling to herself, her deep green eyes and freckled cheeks shining in the light of the dying fire. "You need to sleep."
"But Grandmother -" Benalban clung at her hand, imploring her not to leave, "can't I have a story? Please?" Knowing that the child wouldn't sleep otherwise, Grandmother sighed, and sat down on the end of the girl's bed. Her aged hands ran over the strong bear skin beneath her as she tucked Benalban down, the girl's young and rosy face positively radiating excitement.
"Which story would you like to hear?"
"Tell me the story," the little girl whispered eagerly, "of the ice boy and the flower princess and their adventures with the dragon rider and the arrow-splitter."
Her grandmother chuckled quietly to herself. "You've heard it so many times before."
"It's the best one of all."
The child, for all her innocence, was right. The elder woman smiled and said, "It's a long story, my child. So we'd better not waste any more time."
Notes: The name 'Benalban' is Gaelic for 'woman of Scotland'.
I don't know how often this story will be updated as plot details are still very, very hazy, but hopefully they'll be regular-ish. Hope you enjoy it :)
