4PM -
I walked into the coffee shop because it was the only place nearby that had decent coffee and free WiFi.

I immediately noticed this guy that was already sitting there when I walked in. Back corner. Dark sweater.

Brown hair slightly messy like he ran his hands through it a few too many times. Head down, writing something on paper like he was trying to untangle the world.

I noticed him. Of course I did. He's my type.
But it wasn't until I sat down that I felt him.

His eyes. I don't know how I knew, I didn't look up right away, but I knew they were on me. And when I finally glanced his way, he was already looking, like he'd been waiting for me to look back.

I smiled softly to myself, shaking it off. He probably wasn't. My mind was just bored from cramming essays into my skull.

I kept pretending to study. Reading the same sentence for five minutes while sipping lukewarm coffee. Every now and then, I glanced up. So did he. It was like... some silent rhythm we both felt.

He didn't move. Didn't come over. Just... stayed there. Writing, eyes flicking up every now and then like he was trying to figure me out from afar.

After maybe half an hour, I stood up to go fix my hair. I hadn't even looked in a mirror today, and suddenly I cared about how my hoodie sat on my shoulders. I didn't even really need to go to the washroom, I just wanted to not look like I'd rolled out of bed.

I took longer than I meant to. And when I came back...

He was gone..
The chair sat empty like he'd never been there.

I sat back down, I shook my head, sighing, telling myself it was too bad.

Until I looked down. And saw it.

A tiny folded paper sitting on the edge of my notebook. I picked it up, fingers clumsy suddenly. Unfolded it.

A phone number. And beneath it, in neat handwriting:

"In case you wanted to keep being distracted- Mason"

I smiled.

11PM-

The number stared at me this entire time. It sat in my pocket, glowing like it had weight. I almost didn't text him. But i ended up doing it anyway.

Me : hey... I think you left something behind at the coffee shop.

I stared at the screen like it might bite me. Three minutes passed. Then ten.
I was about to throw my phone across the room when it lit up.

unknown number: only if you're talking about my dignity. pretty sure I forgot that the second I looked at you lmao

I blinked. Then read it again.

Then smiled like a complete idiot.

me: smooth. you do this often? leave your number on girls tables and disappear?

unknown number: nah.
usually I just stare awkwardly and say nothing today was me being brave haha

me: well, brave looks good on you.
even if you did run away before I could say hi

unknown number: I figured you had studying to do
didn't wanna be that guy

me: i mean.. you were that guy. the one I couldn't stop thinking about while pretending to study..

I hesitated before hitting send.
Then I did. No going back now.

His reply came fast.

unknown number: that's wild.. cause same.

My heart skipped something. A beat, a thought, I don't know.

me: oh, really? so what now? you gonna leave more notes in random coffee shops? lol

unknown number: nope. next time I'll sit across from you. deal?

me: deal, mason.

I locked my phone.

And for the first time in a while, I wasn't tired from the day. I was just... excited. Nervous. And kind of floating. This wasn't in the plan.

But I wasn't mad about it.
