Chapter Thirteen

{James}
I stroll up to the owlery, a letter for Mum and Dad clutched in my hand; Sirius has written some as well, but he is too busy snogging Marlene's face off to come with me.
I enter the owlery and I hear the normal shuffling and hooting of birds; but I hear something else, a sniffling, someone softly crying.
I look around and see a girl with long dark red hair leaning out a window.
"Evans?" I call uncertainly.
She spins around, wiping her bloodshot eyes, "What do you want, Potter?" She asks fiercely.
"Nothing," I reply lightly, putting my hands up in defence, "Just delivering a letter. I can do that, can't I?"
Oh my god I am such a prat! It probably has something to do with whatever she was crying about at the Halloween Ball.
She glares at me and her eyes narrow, before she turns away, sticking her head back out the window.
"Hey, no, I'm sorry Evans, that was pretty prattish of me," I say, edging closer to her.
"Yeah it was," she sniffs, not turning around.
"So, what's wrong, is it to do with what made you upset at the Ball?" I ask; I am now standing next to her, leaning against the wall.
"My sister." She says simply.
She clenches a bit of paper in her hand and tears up again.
"Hey, it's okay," I take her hand and squeeze it, she looks up at me, her green eyes filled with tears. I want to kiss her so badly, but I like her too much to throw it all away for one measly kiss, even if I've already missed my chance.
She pulls away, "I don't even know why I'm talking about this too you," she mutters.
"Because your best friend is somewhere off snogging my best friend," I prompt.
The corners of her mouth twitch, and she tries not to smile.
"What about your sister?" I ask.
"She's engaged," Lily says sadly, "and she didn't tell me. I found out when my parents wrote to me, that's what upset me at the Ball. So I wrote to Petunia, saying I was sorry and that I loved her, and that I really wanted to be at the wedding," she gulps, rubbing new tears out of her eyes; I nod and she continues to talk, "but she just wrote back, with this." Lily hands me a piece of paper, that looks like it's been ripped carelessly out of a notebook. I take it from her and read, 'Stay out of my life. FREAK!'
"Shit, Lily," I whisper, handing the paper back, "That's awful."
Lily takes it and looks at the words, "Maybe she's right," Lily finally murmers.
"What? You- you can't think that," I tell her.
But Lily turns to look at me, tears streaming down her face at a tremendous pace, "Ever since I found out that I am a witch and she's not, she's being calling me a freak. And maybe she's right!" Lily yells furiously, scaring the owls, "I'm just a freakish mess that's all I am," she's whispering now, terrified that she's speaking the truth.
"Hey, Evans, you are not a freakish mess," I say firmly, putting a hand in her shoulder, "maybe a mess, but not a freakish one! Just 'cause your a bit of a mess doesn't make you a freak. Everyone in this god-forsaken world is a bit of a mess, it doesn't make you a freak."
She smiles, and wipes her eyes, but then she shakes my hand off and turns away, "but in her world I'm a freak and in this one I'm a mudblood. I don't fit anywhere," she breathes.
"You have so many friends, so many people that love you. Here, at Hogwarts, and out of it. Your puzzle piece fits pretty much anywhere." I tell her.
A small smile appears slowly on her face, "Thanks James," she whispers.
I take the paper from her hand, "One more thing," I say, "tear it up, and throw it out and scream; scream it loud enough to get rid of all those times your sister ever called you it."
"That'll have to be pretty loud," Lily says.
I hand her back the piece of paper, and put my hand on her other one, which is resting in the edge of the stone window, and squeeze it, "I'll help you then. Go on, rip it up."
With both hands Lily rips it in half, then in quarters, then in eighths, over and over again, until it looks like she has a hundred pieces; looking at me first, Lily catapults the paper out the window and it snows down onto the forest.
"FREAK!" She screams, taking my hand again.
"FREAK! FREAK! FREAK!" I join in, screaming with her. Birds erupt from the forest, terrified of the noise; the owls hoot and shriek as we scare the shit out of the birds.
I scream with Lily until my lungs hurt, and when she is finally done, I stop too. She turns back to me, laughing; I grin.
"Thanks James," she says, once her laughter has finally abated.
I can't help it anymore; I lean in and kiss her, cupping her cheek with one hand, and the other on her hip.
For a second she is tense, then she relaxes, standing on the tips of her toes to make it easier. She places one hand on my collar bone, and the other on one of my cheeks.
She tastes like chocolate and smells of raspberry lip balm.
When we finally break apart, we press our foreheads together; Lily still on her tippy-toes.
"Are we a thing yet, Lily?" I whisper.
"Call me Evans," she replies softly, before practically jumping up and kissing me again.
"Okay," she says, when we break apart this time, "we're a thing now, James."
I grin, and give her a quick kiss. Her hands are now around my neck, and mine are on her back.
"Call me Potter," I say cheekily; she laughs, throwing her beautiful head back, her hair dangling down.
"Well, Potter," she enunciates, popping the 'P', "Now that we're a thing... They're finally letting us go to Hogesmeade..."
"Evans, how would you like to come to Hogesmeade with me?" I ask, unable to keep the grin off my face.
"You've got yourself a date, Potter," Lily smiles, her green eyes sparkling.
We kiss again and outside November rain starts to bucket down.
