Mely's POV
"I can't believe that jerk! Ugh!"
I was so frustrated that I was talking to myself. That is so not healthy. Seriously, why does this always happen to me? First it was Liam, then Grant, and then Richard, the list goes on! This is ridiculous. I swear fate has it in for me.
"No rest for the wicked..." Too bad I'm not wicked...or am I? It's hard to tell with my occupation.
I don't understand them. Not a single one. Nor will I ever.
My musings ended when I heard a tapping at the window. I looked and saw that it was my mother's pet falcon. I opened the window for Ula and he hopped onto my forearm, luckily I was wearing a long sleeved shirt.
"Oh Ula. Hello!" I cooed towards him. I petted him softly and gave him a treat. Strapped to his leg was a message from my mother. I took it out of the casing, while Ula hopped to my bed post and perched on it.
It read:
Mel,
This is an urgent message. The Royals where you are have contacted us. They want us to find their son. Seeing as your father and I aren't there, it is up to you and Ky. However, they have some conditions. They do want him found, but they do not want to bring him back forcefully. It is understood he left for a reason and they trust him. They only want to be contacted when he is found so that they know that he is safe. He is free to do as he pleases, if and only if, he remains in contact with his parents.
Be careful, sweetie.
Well this is going to be fun. I looked towards Ula who was preening his feathers carefully.
"Ulaa...Do I have to?" I complained to the bird.
He stopped what he was doing and just looked at me like I was stupid for even asking a question like that.
"You're soo not helpful, Ula."
He just squawked in protest to the statement. I went to my desk and wrote a response to my mother, saying that we would take care of it and that they should be careful too. After writing it, I went to Ula. I put the piece of paper in the little casing and let Ula hop onto my forearm. I walked over to the open window and held my arm out. Ula took a moment to look back at me and then flew away. I watched him fly until he was but a speck in the sky and disappeared.
I don't want to see him, but I have to tell Ky. It has become our new mission. And out of my room I left. I dreaded each step I took because I had to go face him. I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I can't help it! I have had enough experiences with princes that I am entitled to judge them. I don't know why I don't learn from the past every time I meet one, but this time I will. I will never trust him. Princes are the spawn of the devil.
Around me, I didn't notice the servants scurrying away from me. I was shaking with anger, barely controlling it. I took deep, deep breaths to calm myself down before I reached Ky. I looked all over the house and finally saw them in the garden. I took more deep breaths before reaching the door to the garden. I put my hand on the handle, gripping it. Once I felt I was finally calm, I turned the knob and stepped outside. Both boys noticed me, but I only looked at the one I needed.
"Ky! I got a message from mom," I told him, blatantly trying to ignore HIS presence.
He took a quick glance towards HIM and then looked back at me.
"Is it important?" I nodded and just thrust my thumb back towards HIM.
"It concerns him."
I knew his interest was piqued the moment my thumb pointed towards him. I pulled up a chair next to Ky and faced HIM. I gave the message to Ky and he read it while I addressed HIM.
"You need to contact your parents," I told him. "They want to know that you are safe and sound."
"And how would you know that?" he asked.
This was not going to be easy. Because of the circumstances, he was obliged to know who we were and what we do.
"Ky, you tell him. I'm done talking," I told my brother.
"Uhm...Okay."
"Well, go on," he interrupted.
"Right. Well, we are...how to put this delicately? Let's just say we're hired help for special people," he sidetracked.
"Hired...help?" HE questioned. Ky hesitantly nodded.
"Oh, just tell him the truth!" I interjected, fed up with the nonsense.
"Fine! Fine! We're assassins!" Ky blurted out.
He just sat there, shocked still. I could tell he was trying to process the information, then he looked a little scared.
'Good,' I mused. 'He should be.'
