Something Old

This one is for Shreya, who will probably print out a fetus picture of Calum and give it to me on my wedding day and tell me it's my something old. (But it wouldn't matter as long as you dance with me all night)

I ❤ you, Shreya!

Six knocks sound on the door, with a pause between every two knocks. This was their code knock.

"Come in, Calum!" Shreya calls out, deciding against standing up in her heavy traditional wedding outfit, a hot pink Lehenga with delicate embroidery and little shiny stones covering almost the entire material.

"Oh my God!" Calum gasps, "close the door!" Shreya reminds him. "Oh, right, sorry. You look so beautiful right now. I've seen you in a Lehenga so many times and yet you look so...ethereal right now."

"Shut up, you idiot." She hugs him carefully, afraid that all her fancy jewelry, that comes along with her rich and beautiful culture, might get tangled on his suit. "I came here to give you something." Calum pulls out a small black velvet box. He opens it with shivering fingers, as if he is getting married, and reveals a withered yellow guitar pick attached to a thin white gold necklace.

"What is this?" she asks, hoping that he wouldn't make her cry with all her make-up on.

"This is the first pick I used at the first Rock Out With Your Socks Out show. You were there with me through out the whole tour and it was during that period of time where we truly became best friends. So this is my gift to you. You need something old, something new and something borrowed. This is your something old."

Shreya takes a deep breath, something she has learned over time that helps to control her tears. "Calum you piece of shit. Why do you have to be so sweet? You're gonna make me cry and I haven't even said my vows!" she crushes him in a hug, thanking God that their friendship withstood the test of time.

A FEW HOURS LATER...

After the bride's and groom's family members have given their speeches, Calum rushes for the microphone, not wanting to let anyone rob him of the speech that he put a lot of effort into.

"Thank you everyone for gracing this wedding today. Although it may not look like it, I have actually put in a lot of effort into planning this wedding with Shreya. Man, Indian weddings are complicated!" he pauses for effect and everyone laughs. Everyone laughs when it's Calum Hood even if what he says isn't funny because the face he makes is always funny.

"Before I start, I just want to let everyone know that when I first met Shreya, I made it clear to my band; oh, right, I'm in a band! We're called 5 Seconds of Summer and we would have played today if not for our damn lead guitarist. So, when I first met Shreya, I told the band that she's off bounds. I tried everything I could to keep Shreya away from those dirty boys but this dipshit, Michael Gordon Clifford, just couldn't stay away from her." He grins at Michael, who grins at Shreya and holds her hand tighter.

"You lucky bastard!"

"Shreya, do you remember that pact we made? The one where we said we'll get married if we're still single when I'm 35 and you're 32?" the bride nods, smiling at the memory of the pact they made nearly twelve years ago.

"Hey can we do a thing?" Calum asks. "Does it require me moving?" Shreya folds the current page of her book and looks at Calum. "Not really; maybe. If we are both single when I'm 35 and you're 32, can we marry each other?" Shreya furrows her brows, not understanding why her best friend would suggest that. "We know each other so well, and we rarely have huge fights, we always have each other's backs. I mean, we're best friends!" Shreya considers the proposition. "Why not? We should totally do that, dude. But is this by anyway inspired by FRIENDS?" Calum has been binge watching FRIENDS lately. "Nope, not at all!"

"Well, now you know that's never happening even though you're only 27 now; because if we know Michael at all, we know he's clingier than Cling Wrap and he will never let you go, ever."

The guests burst out laughing again, Shreya glances at Michael and notices that his eyes were  gleaming. "It's true, you know?" Michael tells her. "I know. I've always known," she kisses him on his lips and pulls back before there was even a chance to deepen the kiss. "You have an entire lifetime to kiss me, Michael!" she chides when he goes back for another kiss.

"Now that you're married to Michael, I am looking forward to see you on tour all the time. It almost feels like she's marrying the entire band, huh, boys?" Calum looks at Ashton and Luke. "She was dating the band before this!" Luke says.

Calum laughs and continues his speech. "I'm not going to drag this speech so I'll just be quick. I know I don't actually have to say this, but I'll say this: if you break her heart, Michael, you're dead. And Shreya, if you break his heart, you're dead too, okay? I love you two. Please get busy making babies!"

Calum steps off the stage and goes down to the bride and groom to hug them both while successfully managing to keep his tears in his eyes.

THE NIGHT BEFORE...

Maia turns over in their shared bed, facing Calum's back. She moves close to him and wraps her left leg and arm over his warm body.

"Baby, are you awake?" she asks.

Of course, he's awake.

"Mmhmm."

"I can't come to the wedding tomorrow."

His body tenses for a second before he turns to lay on his back and face her. "What? Why not?"

She climbs on top of him and straddles his thighs. "Because I know you still love her."

Calum opens his mouth to say something but she puts a finger over his mouth. "Listen to me. I know you still love her. Don't bother denying because I can feel it. But I love you and I can't sit there tomorrow knowing that you're probably going to be sad and I won't be able to do anything."

"I'm sorry. But I do love you."

"Don't be sorry. I know that you love me. You've been the most amazing boyfriend and I couldn't ask for anyone better to be in my life. You've given me a family and an extended family and showered me with so much of love. And I know that some part of you will always love her. And it sucks for me to have to share your love with her. But I love Shreya too; she's such a great friend!"

"I want you to know that I will always love you, Calum. I'll always be here, for as long as you want me to be here."

PRESENT DAY...

It is almost 11p.m. and the wedding party is going on at a full blast. Shreya's parents had hired the best Bhangra dancers in town and everyone was currently dancing to the music along with the dancers. No one can really resist the beats that a Dhol make; Indian or not.

Calum sneaks out of the wedding hall through the dancing crowd and dials a number. She picks on the first ring. "Hello?"

"I'm so sorry that I put you through all that hurt. I want you to know right now, that you're the one I love, with all of my heart. You are the one I go back home to every night, and I'll do that gladly for the rest of my life."

"Come back home, I'm waiting for you. I love you."

"I love you." Calum rushes to his car, without bidding goodbye to anyone. He carefully speeds most of his way home, without crashing into anyone or anything. He doesn't care about getting caught for driving above the speed limit; he has all the money in the world and the best woman by his side.
