Hypothetical

For months, Y/N has consistently been missing games. Her teammates believe that it's a recurring injury that never healed properly. However, missing so much time doing what she loves with the people is killing her more than her persistent health issues.

Noticeable problems began around the time of Hans' funeral. That setting tormented her. As much as she felt her own grief, her eyes couldn't help but dart around to the others - taking in their devastation. Every detail has stuck with her since. Each reaction haunts her nightmares

It's a cool autumn evening in Minnesota. A small group of Ducks are hanging out in Y/N's lit-up treehouse. A stack of board games sits in the corner as the players form a poor excuse for a circle. The current game in play is Doctor Doctor. Although they got approval beforehand, it begins to send Y/N reeling.

With each round that passes, she becomes more and more zoned out. She also becomes further engulfed in her thick blanket. Staring at her friends simulating invasive procedures on a game from their childhood becomes too much for her.

"If I died before you, would you be sad?" She asks the morbid question during Connie's turn, stopping her in her tracks.

"What kind of question is that? Y/N, if I have to outlive you, I won't know what to do with myself." Charlie immediately shares the consensus.

"None of us would. It'd be constant crying." Connie corrects the captain.

"Where did that come from?" Guy doesn't want to imagine it.

"Yeah, are you sick or something?" Fulton fears the future.

"No, it's just a hypothetical situation," Y/N replies lowly and sinks into the blanket, desperate for warmth as she grows ever colder.

5 months later...

The world has never seemed so bleak. Now, it remains forever changed.

A few days into March, Y/N's illness took her life. She died in the early hours as she slept, allowing her to pass without the pain that plagued her daily life. This was Death's 1 mercy.

Ducks have been devastated since the second they found out. They wondered why she wasn't at practice until Orion walked in and broke the tragic news and informed them that practice was cancelled. In that moment, they became paralysed. None of them knew she had cancer.

Charlie wanted to lead the team, but he couldn't. He still can't. Not without her on his wing.

Fulton completely shut down. He's reverted to his introverted ways that ruled his life before Y/N changed everything. Most days, he hides in his room. Even Portman struggles to get any words out of him. Ken tries to help. He ultimately feels worse for failing.

Averman's spark has dimmed. Jokes are practically non-existent because he can no longer see the humour in anything.

The girls have always had a special bond given how few of them there are. Since Y/N's death, Connie and Julie have grown closer to try and close the large hole she left. Guy and Adam support them as much as they can whilst battling their own grief.

Dwayne's southern charm is unwavering as he takes care of his friends - taking on the unspoken burden. He can barely find a minute to grieve as he throws himself into any work he can. Still, the stars regularly witness his tears.

Goldberg lives in a self-protective state of delusion. He frustrates the others at times because they don't think he's serious. The truth is, he's scared to accept that she's gone. But he misses her and all the times they'd hang out at his family's diner. Russ and Averman understand him the most. They bridge the gaps in fragmented moments with the group.
