Nick POV
"Damn it," I cursed watching Zen running of like that. Couldn't he wait? I mean what's so special about that damn shop anyway? I parked the car and closed the car door while putting the car keys on my back pocket. I walked to the door and opened it; when I saw everyone was smiling like they had won the lottery. I looked at them and saw they were pointing to something or to someone towards Zen. I saw Zen calling out a little girl name. I walked to an old guy probably in mid-fifties, I was about to ask him what's going on but was stopped when I saw the little girl squealed Zen's name and hugged him like her life depends on it. I was curious, who was that girl? Is she his sister? No it can't be, he doesn't have a sister.
"Excuse me sir, but may I ask what's going on?" I asked to the old man not taking my eyes from Zen who was smiling broadly at the girl who he was hugging. He carried her to the nearest stall and sat down while putting her on top of the table. The rest of the people went and circle at the place they were sitting and were laughing at something the kid said.
"That's Maddie," he points his finger to the little girl and continued, "Zen's source of life," he paused again while chuckling. Source of life?
"What you mean sir?"
"Let's talk in my office." He said to me with all seriousness latched on his voice. I gulped and followed him to his office; we walked past Zen and made to the office. I entered and saw the office had a crème wall colour with pictures of his worker's alongside Zen and his parents.
"So, who are you?" The old man said looking at me, who sat on his chair while bobbing his head to the chair in front of him indicating me to sit. I sat knowing I should do what he says, because I know behind those icy blue eyes, the grey moustache and grey hair with a body like a Santa clause this guy isn't a joke type guy. Get me?
"I'm Nick, Zen's sort of friend. Well to be friend." I said while extending my hand to shake his.
"I'm Mc Floy, nice to meet you and you couldn't be same Nick that might happened to bully Zen's life are you?" he said after shaking my hand while raising his eyebrows suspiciously, I gulped and looked down on the floor. I nod at his question; I couldn't bear to say I am to him knowing I did ruin his life.
"Ah, I see. Well did he forgive you?"
"No, not exactly."
"Good, if I were him I wouldn't too," the old man hissed.
"Sir, I already did apologize to him and I want to fix it. I regret of hurting him, I want to change all that and now Zen had gave me a chance to be his friend."
"I see, that kind boy."
"Yeah, and you can trust on me sir, I won't hurt him anymore."
"You better boy or else my cone would be up your ass and up your mouth and squashed it before you could even say hi to someone, you hear me boy?" threaten the old man to me, I nod in which the old man smiled at me. Seriously, is this guy had some brain damaged. One moment his nice and another moment his like a devil in disguise. I shook mentally at the thought and concentrate on him fearing he would kill me if I don't listen to him.
"Back to your question, that girl is Maddie. She's Zen's adopted sister, well sort of."
"Sorry, what you mean sir?"
"Well they met three years ago in the hospital before Zen's parent died. He was actually going to celebrate my birthday there, since I was admitted to the hospital for a heart attack," the old man chuckled as he remembered the event while taking a pen and swinging around his fingers.
I kept quiet and listen to the old man said, "Zen was on his way to my room when he saw Maddie sitting there crying right outside the doctor's room. Zen went there and talked to girl which in the end brought her to my room. The girl light chocolate hair, green eyes and those hideous Barbie clothes," he paused and we both laugh as he remembered her in her dress while I imagine her in that dress. Definitely hideous.
"Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I have a sister who is crazy about dolls," I chuckled and positioned myself properly in the seat so I could listen to the story better.
The old man chuckled and said "Tell me about it boy, anyways, day by day Zen would spend his time with her after he found out she has a brain tumour. Until the death of his parents, well that's another story. Continuing on, he vowed to himself to never let Maddie go through any sort of pain, that's until her parents told Zen to stopped seeing her," he grumbled the last part. My eyebrows scrunched up and said "Not let Zen see her? Why?"
"That's well for Zen to tell why," he said while looking at the windows that showed Zen and several unknown people laughing at the little girl, I smile at the scenery and took my phone out and captures it. What can I say; it's rare to see Zen smile like that.
I turned my attention to him and finally knot everything together, Zen looking at the phone while smiling, didn't think I would notice huh? Zen running to the store it all makes sense, "Wait that mean, she beat the cancer?"
"Yup my boy, she did."
I smiled looking at them and sudden guilt washed through me. I shook at the feeling and rose up from the chair, "Sir, I should get going. I don't want to interrupt the party," I said as I was extending my hand to shake his but instead he hugged me in a tight embrace, like a father would.
He let me go and said "Nonsense, join the party, the more the merrier," he paused while rubbing his stomach and continued "plus I hope those weirdoes left me some cake," he point his eye's at them.
I chuckled, "No sir it's okay," I said feeling the sudden guilt washed through me again. I can't stand in the same place with Zen without feeling guilty for all I had done.
"No boy –"
"No really its fine, I can't I don't feel quite well now. Sorry maybe some other time?" I said while smiling at him, I think he caught on what I was talking about so he just nod and opened the door for me to leave. I walked out, and saw Zen looked at me for a second then back to the little girl.
I left the shop without saying good bye to anyone, as I was about to sit on the driver seat Zen called out my name. I ignored him, closed the door and tried to start the car, emphases the word tried. The door opened showing Zen with an anger face. I walked out from the car and looked on the ground.
Before Zen could say anything, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," I said still looking down on the ground. Zen kept quiet and I continued "I felt guilty, knowing the fact you put your happiness aside to make her happy which makes me feel guilty, I thought you were just some pony little bitch back then but when I found out who she was and what she mean to you and what you did for her well I feel terribly guilty about it. I'm sorry," I paused and looked at him straight in the eye and said "I will work this out, this;" I point my finger to him and me "fix this and be friends. I would try my best to prove you I'm not the Old Nick," I said while going back into my car. "Till then," I paused while putting starting my car and looked at Zen, "Wait for me, and sorry to ruin your party?" I said to him but it came out as a questioned.
Zen chuckled and said "You didn't ruin the party at all, I was curious to why you leave without saying anything but now I know, beside I did give you once chance so better prove me wrong," smiling while showing his pearly white teeth at me. I laughed and said my goodbye's to him.
As I was nearing my house, I couldn't help but to think of Zen. That kind little bastard, I felt such a douche bag now. I promise Zen, I would make this work. I would change this. Till then, wait for me.
