Zyaire POV
⸻
Night always belong to men like me.
The street empty, quiet enough to hear my own breath, but quiet never mean safe. Quiet just mean di city holding its secrets close.
I slip into the backseat of the black Prado waiting by the corner. Tints dark like the night itself, engine humming low. The smell inside a mix of leather, weed, and tension.
Jay in the passenger seat, head on swivel, always watching. Two other soldiers, Rallo and Stitch, in the front.
"Yuh late,," Jay mutter with a small grin, but mi can see di alertness in his eyes.
"Woman business," I reply short, brushing off the reason.
Jay smirks "Aharia, right? Yuh soft ute."
I hiss my teeth but hes not wrong.
Aharia is mi soft spot. The only part of mi life that feel... clean.
⸻
We move out slow, keeping to the less busy lanes.
My phone buzz in my pocket. I already know who it is without looking.
Aharia.
She probably deh home inna mi t-shirt, scrolling TikTok, waiting fi mi text back. Waiting for me to be the boyfriendi can only halfway be.
My heart twist, but i leave the phone there.
Jay glance at mi over his shoulder. "She suspect anything?"
"Woman always suspect," I mutter. "But mi cyah let she see this side. Not yet. Maybe not ever."
He nod slow. "Better she vex than she get pull in. Yuh know this life don't mix wid love, boss."
⸻
We reach the wharf 'round 10:45.
The night air thick with salt and the low hum of water slapping against concrete. The world feel like it holding its breath.
This spot always serve me well — isolated enough fi do work, dark enough fi disappear.
I step out first, the weight of my position pressing on my shoulders but never bending my spine. This is my world.
"Lock down perimeter," I order calmly, but my voice carry authority.
Rallo and Stitch split up instantly, scanning shadows, hands close to metal.
Jay walk beside me as we approach the lone container waiting like a mouth half-open.
Door crack. No light inside. Perfect for business, perfect for betrayal.
"Move smart," I muttercto jay lowly
Inside, crates stacked neat. Smell of saltwater, metal, and the faint tang of oil.
I run my hand along one crate. Solid. Heavy. Full of possibilities — and problems.
"Open it," I said
Jay pry it up with the crowbar. Wood splinters.
the flashlight sweep over the contents: M4 rifles, Glocks, two shotguns. All wrapped tight in plastic, gleaming under the beam.
This is money. This is danger.
"Count everything," I instruct.
The three of us start counting
⸻
Then, headlights slice across the dock.
Every muscle in my body lock.
Another SUV creep in, moving like it own the night..
" companyy" jay said in a sing song voice
Hands brush waistbands. Safety off without a word.
Two man step out. Tall one confident, short one twitchy, eyes dancing like he on edge.
"Evening, ZY," tall one call out, voice carrying a careful respect.
Mi step forward just enough fi catch the light. "Yuh late."
"Traffic," him say, casual. Too casual.
Mi stare him down, letting the weight of my position fill the space between us. "Traffic better not mean tail. If mi see no police, if mi see no lights — mi know exactly weh fi aim first."
Short one swallow, voice shaky. "No man nobody no falla me"
"Unload di van. Move clean. We split and disappear."
⸻
The exchange move like clockwork.
Crates shift from one vehicle to another. Boots scrape against concrete.
Every move, I watch hands, eyes, the space between words.
Jay pass mi at one point, low voice. "Smooth so far."
. Smooth is always the moment before it get messy.
Half-hour pass. Shipment secure.
The night fall silent again, except fi the whisper of the waves and the low hum of crickets.
Jay wipe sweat from his brow. "alr good, can go bck home to me oman yah now"
I sigh " know dem a pree we ino"
" fr but we affi just keep dem out a dis, e less yk e betta"
Mi nod, but mi mind never ease until mi gone from here.
Because this life always come wid a shadow.
⸻
Aharia live in light. Mi live in shadow.
If the two ever collide, mi no sure who survive it.
