How Did This Happen?

Chapter 4

I just spent the rest of the day in the pit because I didn't want to be on Mark's service so I switched with Izzie. It was almost lunch time I just had this last patient. After I was done I went to the cafeteria and I saw Derek waiting for me and he already had food waiting. "Hey Derek!" I said.
"Hi!" Derek said. He then gave me a salad to start with and I was starving I didn't eat breakfast this morning which probably wasn't a good idea because of the baby and all. After I finished the salad Derek gave me some French fries and a burger because he knew that's what I was eyeing. "So have you just been resting since you're off Mark's service?" Derek asked.
I shook my head no and said,"No I switched with Izzie and I'm now working in the pit." He just nodded his head. We then ate the rest of our lunch in a comfortable silence. I said,"Okay I have got to go but I will see you after work."
"Okay bye." Derek said also getting up and kissing me softly as we both hurried off. Just as I was heading back to the pit there was incoming trauma and I got paged so ran down and dressed in the yellow gown and put in gloves and asked,"Okay what do we have?"
"He had a blow to the head and has a broken leg." The paramedic said. I nodded and took him inside and paged Derek. When Derek got there he said,"Okay what do we have?"
"Blow to the head and he broke his leg so I paged Dr. Torres." I told him.
He nodded and said,"Okay Dr. Grey get a CT scan and then book an OR."
I nodded and said,"Okay Dr. Shepard." He just smiled at me and nodded his head as he left the room.

I got the CT scan and I gave it to Derek and he just stared at it and said,"We have to get up to the OR now!" I nodded and prepped him and brought him up to the OR where Derek was scrubbing in and so was I. Once we got in there Derek opened up his head and we had to take out some of the guys skull because it was broken and it was crushing his brain. Then the patient started coding and I started do compressions and said,"Charge to 100!" It didn't work I shocked him at least five more times but he was already dead. "Time of death 3:01." Derek said. I just left the OR and discarded my gloves and my gown and mask. I started to wash my hands and then Derek came in and said,"The damage to his brain was really bad and I don't think he would have made it anyways." I just nodded and said, "I don't even really know why I'm sad I just am I didn't even know this guy."
Derek nodded and said,"I know it might just be the pregnancy hormones or something."
I nodded and said,"Yeah it probably is." He then came over and hugged me and asked quietly,"Hey is your shift over?"
"No not yet I just have to check on a few more patients." I told him.
"Okay I think I might go lay down in a on call room and come and get me when you're done." He said. I nodded and checked on the patients and then I went to find Derek. I found him asleep in one of the on call rooms. I kissed him and laid by his side. I felt his arms wrap around me and I sighed. And he said,"Hey do you want to go home?" I just nodded and said, "Can we get something to eat first?"
He chuckled and said, "Sure. How about we just pick up Italian?" I nodded and then I asked,"Can you pick me up I don't think I can walk." He just nodded and picked me up and he carried me to the locker room got my bag and then he carried me to the car and said,"Okay I have to set you down to unlock the car." I just nodded and then after he unlocked the car he set me into the passenger seat and buckled my seat belt. Then he got in and drove to the Italian place picked up some chicken Alfredo for me and ravioli for him. We got back to the trailer and we are in silence and then we sat on the little make shift deck in front of the trailer and I sat in his lap with a blanket curled around me and we looked up at the stars.

Derek's POV
Meredith fell asleep in my lap so I carried her to bed and got in right after her and she curled into my body. I then pressed a kiss to her stomach and said,"I love you baby! And we are going to take great care of you!" I then kissed her belly again and I could feel that she was starting to get a baby bump. I then kissed Meredith's forehead and wrapped my arm around her waist and we fell asleep. I woke up to Meredith running out of bed and the the bathroom and I ran after her and held her hair back and rubbed her back as she threw up. I then wiped her mouth and gave her some water. She said,"Thanks Der."
I smiled and said,"No problem." She then curled into my side and didn't move I think she fell asleep again I checked my watch and saw that it was almost time for work I then said,"Mer it's almost time to leave." She just groaned got up I gave her a breakfast bar and gave her some juice for breakfast. We then left and she brought her scrubs into my office that I have for being the head of neuro and she changed and then I gave her a key and said,"Mer this is a key to my office incase you need to change or you can sleep on the couch in here it is actually really comfortable."
She nodded and said,"Thanks Derek you're the best!"
I smirked and said,"I know."
She scoffed,"You know you don't have to be so cocky." I just nodded and she said,"You are gonna get Derek. Then she came at me and kissed me and I kissed her back and then I set her int he couch and then just as I was to get aroused she said,"Well I gotta go Derek." She then smirked at me and left. I then muttered,"She is so gonna have to pay for that."
