I cleared my throat. “Well . . . Amy, would you go out to dinner with me?”

She let out a shocked gasp, a real one. Then the negative thoughts started to kick in.

        . . . HOLY SHIT, WHAT HAVE I DONE???

“I . . . I,” she stuttered.

 CHAPTER 5:

I lowered my head and braced myself for rejection. There was no way that Amy was going to say yes; I think the girl hated me. Usually, I wasn’t masochistic, but Amy made me that way.

            “I . . . I . . . okay,” she said.

            I nodded my head, expecting her no. “I understand . . .”

            Wait, she said . . . OKAY?!

I looked up to meet Amy’s gorgeous green eyes. She was blushing slightly.

My jaw dropped. “Wait . . . did you just say yes?”

A gleam sparked in her eyes. “No.”

I frowned. It was just a dumb figment of my imagination. Stupid.

            “I said okay.”

I glanced back up at her a second time, and she was smirking. Ah, that’s the Amy I knew. She smiled wider and sat closer to me. Not in my lap like earlier but on the edge of my bed.

“You’re not messing with me, are you?” I asked warily.

She laughed, and it was a real laugh. Not one of those teasing laughs, but a genuine one. It was nice. Her voice sounded like Christmas bells.

“Surprisingly, no! I actually think I might want to go,” Amy said.

I grinned widely. “Well, how about tonight?”

Amy frowned. “Not tonight, dumbass. I’m babysitting your brother, smart one.”

I shook my head. “Right, der. And I’m not that big of a dumbass!”

She laughed and shoved my shoulder lightly. “Yeah, right! Says the guy who’s failing!”

I pretended to wince, but leaned in and whispered, “Well, maybe what I need is a tutor.”

            She shivered. “Maybe . . . or . . .”

Amy looked me dead in the eye and said, “Maybe you need a new brain!”

She snickered, falling back onto my bed. I acted like it didn’t hurt, but honestly, it did. I didn’t like that people thought I was stupid. Football just took up a lot of time. And I wasn’t failing — you had to be passing all your classes to be in sports.
