aubree's p.o.v.

// // //

aubree dialed michael's number once, twice, three times, and yet he wouldn't pick up.

she knew that she had upset him, but all aubree wanted was a chance to apologise. she knew now what she wish she'd noticed before.

michael wasn't the one in the wrong this entire time, she was. she was the one who wouldn't believe her best friend (who she'd known her whole life) over some fuckboy.

aubree felt dreadful.

she called him four or five more times, her walk speeding up to a run. she had to see michael, she had to see her best friend as soon as possible.

"michael," she huffed down the phone, finally leaving him a voicemail. "michael, i'm sorry. i'm on my way to your house, if you're not there i'm going to calums, and then ashtons, and then everywhere i can think of. i need to see you. i'm sorry, i love -- uh," she cut herself off when she realised she was outside his house. "i'll finish that sentence soon, i promise."

she ended the voicemail, walking up to michael's front steps and knocking on the door. his mother, karen, opened the door; smiling at aubree.

"audrey, honey," she hugged aubree, "long time no see."

"the longest," aubree hugged karen back, needing the comfort of a mother. aubree felt her eyes start to well up, and cleared her throat awkwardly, stepping back from michael's mother. "i'm sorry about daryl."

"it's fine, it can't be helped, i suppose," she let out a sad sigh, then noticing the state aubree was in. "what's wrong, dear?" karen frowned, but aubree just shook her head.

"i'll explain it later," she coughed a little, chewing on her bottom lip. "i really need to see michael. is he here, or?"

"no, i'm afraid not," karen frowned. "he hasn't come home from school."

"okay, thank you," aubree stood back, walking down the pathway. "sorry about daryl, again," she shouted over her shoulder.

she walked down their patio, waiting for the door to close before running across town to calum's house.

once she was there, she felt her nerves start to reach a level they'd never been at before, calum's mum opening the door.

"hi," aubree smiled widely, fiddling with the ends of her lilac hair. "is calum there?"

"yes, i'll go get him," calum's mother smiled at aubree, closing the door behind her.

aubree tapped her foot on the ground, a small smile slipping onto her lips at the sound of calum telling his mother he loved her, opening the door.

"hey aub," he smiled, stepping outside and closing the door behind him. "what can i do for you?"

"michael," she let out a low breath, "is michael here?"

"no," calum smiled sadly at her. "we hung out earlier, though, he seemed really down. i think he's at ashton's?"

"ashton's house, got it, thank you," aubree pulled calum into a tight, sweaty hug, releasing him and running again.

her legs were sore, and her breathing was heavy, but she wanted nothing more than to fix things with michael.

once she was outside ashton's house, she didn't know what to do.

well, she did, she knew she should knock on the door, but she didn't know what to do after that. she'd probably end up begging ashton to let her see michael, and then beg michael to forgive her.

she let out a quiet laugh at the thought, knocking on the door and then leaning her forehead against it as she waited.

the sound of footsteps coming close to the door came all too soon, causing aubree to stand up straight again, rubbing the inevitable red patch on her head.

"hello," a little boy was stood at the door, and aubree almost cooed at his cuteness. this was harry, ashton's little brother.

"hi," aubree smiled a little. "is ashton there?"

"he's in the living room," harry opened the door wider, letting aubree in. "are you his girlfriend?"

"no," she let out another laugh. "i'm just his friend."

"oh," harry frowned. "okay," with that, he skipped into another room, leaving aubree to try and find her way to the front room.

it was a large house, in aubree's opinion, one of those fancily laid out ones, with an entrance hall and everything.

she stood there for a while, picking at her nails whilst trying to pick a direction to walk in, although her mind was soon made up for her, when ashton walked into the hall.

"aubree!" he smiled widely, running up and hugging her. "what are you doing here? you're all sweaty, ew," he giggled.

"i wanted to talk to michael," she sighed. "i ran from luke's house to his, to calums, and now yours."

"damn," ashton let out another giggle. "he's in the room i just came from, i went to get snacks. i'll leave you guys alone for a while, i suppose. he's kinda mad, but also kinda sad, which i think is a really weird combination."

"ashton, thank you," aubree let out a sound of relief, hugging the giggly boy again.

he pulled away first, letting out a final giggle. "any time, just don't do anything i wouldn't do," he winked, walking into the kitchen and leaving me alone.

aubree looked at the doorway to the living room, her gut twisting nervously. she took steps towards it, each step feeling heavier and heavier, her feet dragging against the carpet.

she stood in the doorway for as long as possible, being careful not to move and draw attention to herself as she studied michael, taking in every one of his features.

she felt something like butterflies filling her stomach, thinking back to the time she'd kissed his lips, and the comforting looks he gave her when she went to get her piercings done, and every single reassuring touch and hug, realising what she'd wanted all this time was in front of her.

"fuck!"
