They say silence speaks louder than words. But no one tells you how painful silence can be—how it eats at your heart, how it turns even the most beautiful bond into a wound that refuses to heal.

After that night at Marine Drive, something inside me broke. I couldn’t bring myself to look at Dev the same way. Every time I thought of his words—“You’re just afraid to choose”—a sharp pang of guilt pierced through me.

And yet, instead of fighting for us, I did the opposite.

I pulled away.

🌆 Avoidance

At first, it was subtle. Not answering his calls immediately. Pretending to be buried in work. Making excuses when he suggested dinner.

“Sorry, Dev,” I’d text. “Long day. Maybe another time.”

He never complained. Not once. But I could feel the disappointment in the pauses before his replies. I could feel his confusion, his hurt—though he tried to hide it.

Sunday walks became the hardest.

The beach that had once felt like our sacred place now felt like a battlefield. Priya would chatter as usual, but I found myself staying quiet, staring at the waves, avoiding his gaze.

One Sunday, as the three of us walked along the shoreline, Dev slowed his steps until he was beside me.

“Neha,” he said softly, “are you angry with me?”

The gentleness in his tone nearly undid me. I wanted to scream no, to tell him I was angry at myself, at my helplessness, at the chains of expectations that bound me.

But instead, I shook my head quickly. “No, not at all. Just… tired.”

His eyes searched mine, full of questions I refused to answer.

Priya glanced at us, her brows furrowed. She knew. She always knew.

🌙 Conversations with Priya

That night, as we sat in our apartment, Priya finally confronted me.

“Neha, what are you doing?”

I looked up from my laptop, startled. “What do you mean?”

She crossed her arms. “Don’t act innocent. You’re avoiding Dev. I see it every day. He sees it. And it’s killing him.”

I swallowed hard, my chest tightening. “I don’t have a choice, Priya. My parents have already started talking to families. If I… if I let this go any further, it’ll only hurt him more.”

Her eyes softened, but her voice was firm. “And you think pushing him away without telling him the truth is better? Neha, you love him. Don’t deny it.”

Tears filled my eyes. “Of course I love him. That’s why this is so hard. I can’t break my family’s trust. You know how much they’ve sacrificed for me. I can’t just… throw their wishes aside.”

Priya sighed, sitting beside me and holding my hand. “Love always demands a choice. And no matter what you choose, it’s going to hurt someone. The question is—who are you willing to hurt less? Him? Or yourself?”

I couldn’t answer. My silence was my answer.

💔 Dev’s Attempts

Days turned into weeks, and Dev didn’t stop trying.

He showed up outside my office once, holding two cups of coffee.

“You always forget lunch on Fridays,” he said with a small smile.

I forced a polite one in return, taking the cup but making an excuse about a meeting. I watched his smile falter as he nodded and let me go.

Another time, he called Priya late at night. I overheard her in the living room, her voice low but urgent.

“Dev, she’s… she’s complicated right now. Please, just give her time.”

I buried my face in my pillow, my chest aching. I knew he wouldn’t give up so easily. That was the kind of man he was. Steadfast. Patient. Too good for me.

🌊 The Breaking Point

It was a Sunday again. Priya and I were walking toward the beach when Dev appeared, waiting for us near the entrance to Sunshine Residency.

He looked tired—like he hadn’t slept in days—but his eyes lit up the second he saw me.

“Neha,” he said, stepping forward. “Can we talk? Just us?”

My stomach twisted. I wanted to say yes. I wanted to hear his voice, to tell him everything, to let him hold me until my fears melted away.

But instead, I took a step back. “I… I can’t right now.”

His jaw tightened, but his voice stayed calm. “You’ve been saying that for weeks.”

Priya looked between us, worry etched on her face. She started to speak, but Dev raised a hand gently. His eyes never left mine.

“Just tell me one thing, Neha,” he said quietly, his voice breaking. “Do you want me to stop trying?”

My throat closed up. The words clawed inside me, desperate to get out. No. Don’t stop. Please don’t stop.

But when I opened my mouth, what came out was a whisper I barely recognized.

“Yes.”

The look on his face in that moment… it shattered me.

His eyes darkened, the light dimming, his shoulders sagging. He gave a small nod, forcing a faint smile.

“Okay. If that’s what you want.”

And just like that, he turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the crowd.

I stood frozen, tears spilling down my cheeks, the weight of my own words crushing me. Priya wrapped her arm around me, but even her warmth couldn’t stop the cold emptiness that spread inside me.

That night, I cried silently into my pillow, knowing I had just broken the heart of the only man I had ever truly loved.

And maybe… my own too.
