The evening sky looked like a painting I didn’t want to see. The shades of red and orange bled into each other like wounds that refused to heal. The sea mirrored the fire above, restless, rising and falling, as if it too knew tonight was not going to be ordinary.

I stood at the familiar stretch of Sunshine Beach, clutching the hem of my dupatta with trembling hands. This was our place. The same beach where I first met Dev, where countless Sundays turned into memories, where laughter dissolved into the sound of crashing waves, where we watch sunsets together, where silent glances spoke louder than words.

And now, it was also the place where I would shatter my own heart.

I heard footsteps behind me. Slow. Heavy. Familiar. My heart betrayed me, leaping with hope before my mind could scold it.

“Neha…”

Just one word, my name, but my whole body shivered. I turned, and there he was — Dev. The golden light of sunset painted his face in hues of fire, his dark eyes searching mine with all the emotions I had been trying to bury. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and the breeze toyed with his hair, but he looked as though he was carrying the weight of the entire world on his shoulders.

For a moment, neither of us moved. Neither of us spoke. Only the sound of the ocean dared to interrupt.

Finally, Dev broke the silence.
“You stopped answering my calls. You stopped replying to my messages. I… I thought maybe you never wanted to see me again.”

His voice cracked at the end, and it pierced through me like glass.

“I…” My words stuck in my throat. My lips moved but no sound came. How do you tell the person you love that you love them too much to hurt them… yet you’re hurting them anyway?

Dev took a step closer. His eyes held mine, demanding answers I had run from for weeks.
“Neha, talk to me. Did I do something wrong? Or is it really… is it really because of them?”

Them. My family. The invisible chain that bound me tighter than anything else ever could.

I swallowed hard, my chest tightening. “Dev, you know how much I—” I stopped myself, biting my lip till I tasted blood. No, I couldn’t say it. Saying it would only make leaving him harder.

But Dev saw through me. He always did. He gave a small, broken smile. “You don’t have to finish that sentence. I know.”

Tears stung my eyes, blurring his face. “My family… they’ll never accept us. You don’t know how much this kills me, Dev, but I can’t… I can’t go against them. They’re everything I’ve ever lived for. Their happiness, their approval, their love. And if I choose you, I lose them.”

Dev laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “And if you don’t choose me, you lose yourself, Neha. Don’t you see that? You’re hurting yourself to keep them happy. And me? I’m just supposed to stand here and watch you bleed silently?”

The tears I’d been holding back finally slipped free. They streamed down my face, hot and endless, just like the pain inside me.
“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry, Dev. I tried. I really did. But I can’t fight them. I don’t have your courage.”

Dev turned away, running a hand through his hair. His chest rose and fell in sharp breaths as though the air itself had betrayed him. For a moment, I thought he would scream, or walk away, or maybe just disappear into the night.

But instead, he whispered, “Neha, I got promoted.”

My heart stilled. The words hung in the air, strange and heavy.

He looked back at me, his eyes glistening. “They’re transferring me to Singapore. It’s a huge opportunity. One I can’t refuse. One I thought I’d celebrate with you.” His voice broke. “But now… it feels like I’m just being sent away from the only person I wanted to share it with.”

My knees wobbled. Singapore. That meant distance, silence, emptiness. That meant Dev would no longer be a train ride away, no longer a Sunday evening at the beach. He would be… gone.

“When?” I managed to whisper.

“Tomorrow.”

The word hit me like a thunderclap. Tomorrow. So soon. Too soon.

A sob tore through my throat, raw and unstoppable. I clutched my dupatta tightly, as though holding on to it could keep me from falling apart. “Dev…”

He stepped forward suddenly and cupped my face with both his hands. His touch was warm, desperate, trembling. My tears wet his palms as he leaned closer.
“Neha, tell me honestly. Just once. Forget them, forget everything. Just you and me. Do you love me?”

My heart screamed the answer before my lips could. I nodded, choking on my sobs. “Yes… yes, Dev. I love you. I love you more than anything. But…”

He hushed me with a shake of his head. His own tears finally fell, glimmering in the dim light. “No buts. That’s all I needed to hear. That you love me. That I wasn’t alone in this.”

The world around us seemed to vanish. The sea, the sky, the sand — everything blurred until it was just us, two broken souls clinging to each other for one last moment of warmth. He pulled me into his arms, holding me so tightly I thought he might never let go.

I buried my face in his chest, inhaling the familiar scent of him — the scent I knew I would crave for the rest of my life. “I can’t lose you,” I whispered into his shirt.

“You already have,” he whispered back, voice shaking.

When he finally released me, it felt like being torn apart. His eyes locked onto mine one last time, memorizing me the way I memorized him. Neither of us moved, because moving meant the moment would end.

Then, with a heavy breath, Dev stepped back.

“This beach gave me you,” he said softly. “But it’s also taking you away.”

He places a soft kiss on my forehead. And with that, he turned and walked away, his figure growing smaller and smaller against the fading horizon.

I stood frozen, my heart ripped out, my soul screaming silently. The waves crashed louder, as though mocking me. My legs gave way, and I sank into the sand, sobbing until the stars came out.

That evening, the beach became a graveyard for my love.
