Chapter 9

Next thing I know I'm back in my room. Both boys on each side of me were sleeping. I try to smile, but pain shoots through my cheek 'What the?' I stand and try to get over Brady without knocking him to the ground. My feet hit the ground, and I throw my arms up in success. I walk to the mirror and see I have a cut lip, and my cheek is the red. Mental note, don't beat "Payton" up in my sleep. If her name is Payton, then what's my name? I shrug. The halls only have dim lights on which means it's bed time. I yawn and head back to bed. Once I'm comfortable I pull the blanket over all of us. I better enjoy this while it lasts because this will be their last time in here. Then I drift off to sleep. I don't meet up with Payton again. I don't even dream it's just darkness. "Oh my gosh!" I hear a voice yell which jolts me awake "What happened to your face, Payton?" Payton, I want to gag at the sound of that name. I walk to the mirror and see the bruise has turned purple and blue and my lip has dried blood, I must be stronger than I thought. "I don't know maybe I got slapped during the night or something" I can't even look at them. "I want you to leave," I mutter. If I don't say it right away, it will be harder for me. "What?"

"You heard me. I'm going to do the plan myself" I turn but only take a quick little glance. The boys look confused. "Why are you all the sudden going to do the plan by yourself?" I should tell them. They deserve that much. "I had a visit with Payton last night" Brady sighs and sits on my bed while Ryker just stands there. I can't tell what there thinking, and I don't like it. "We had an argument, which you don't need to know. I slapped her, and that's how I got this" I run my fingers over my bruise. I don't take another look at them. I feel a hand wrap around my arm. I turn to see Brady holding me, so I don't leave. "Brady let go" I hiss "Tell us what's wrong, then I will let go" I start kicking and punching, but nothing works I'm too weak. I start laughing like a crazy person "Wouldn't you like to know" I snap back. Ryker runs his hands through his hair. "Fine," I say as I look away from them "It's just you guys don't need me, Payton said," I dart a look at him, "Said that Ryker rather have Payton more than me" I pause "It's true huh?" Please lie just for my sake please, please. He looks up at me with a sad look. No, please no. He nods. Surprisingly more anger rushes in me then sadness, I guess I didn't care for them as much as I thought. "You think the same thing don't you?" He slowly lets go of my arm.

I head down the hall to where the hospital is. There's a room on that side of the building that keeps the records of the Experiments. I lost my two best friends after I figure out the truth I'm leaving. I run down the halls to the other side of the building. My bare feet are making slapping noises on the floor. "Hey, you're not allowed over here!" The guard moves his hand over to a red button "If you push that button I'll snap your neck, now is that really what you want?" I ask glaring at the man intensely. He slams his hand on the button, and an alarm goes off. He looks at me frightened. I turn away. I have no time for him. I sprint down the halls and find a door that says records over the door. I open it. It was dumb that they didn't lock it. I look through the cupboards and find that they are in A-B-C order, so I just look for P. I hear voices down the halls "What happened?" I listen to the guard explain everything. I search faster and find P, I don't even dare read it here, I grab the file and bolt out the door and back down the hall into my room and find Ryker and Brady still there. I make the most disgusted face hoping they'll leave "Don't make that face it doesn't look good on you." I ignore Brady and slam the file on my desk and open it. Dr. James. Payton, five years old, Volunteered to help us with our research. injected at age ten. At age 13 she became sick, my son refused to kill her. I don't blame him, I have a soft spot for her as well. When I read that I took a glance at Ryker, he's not paying attention. Thank goodness. I continue reading. So they injected more of the medicine, I tried to stop them. She was already too weak. It still didn't heal her. 

5/20/2089, The experiments have gone crazy, we have tried our best to control them. But nothing has worked thus far. 

5/21/2089 We have killed many today and lost many, the army found out and is now taking over. They have used many for command purposes. The world has come down a disease, and we have used animal DNA to help human lives, live. 

7/12/2089 Dr. James note. It's gone too far the human beasts are taking over, with Payton as their leader, She has gone mad, we have combined her and another girl body together to save her from dying  and to confuse her and stop her! If this doesn't work, we'll have to put her down like the animal she has now become. 

Dr. James record, 7/17/2089. I have made a cure to stop them and turn them human without getting the disease so that people may walk the earth again, but the army is after it to destroy it, so I've hidden it in the forest right outside of here under a big oak tree. It's never been tested I hope it works. Don't let anyone without beast blood out of the building for they may die, unless you inject them with my cure. I have faith someone will save the human race. I believe in you Payton to keep it. This note will be my last for the army has found me. Goodbye. 

I feel my chest tighten. I've been put in charge of an enormous task, and I need to do it. I grab my map I've been hiding under my pillow and open it. There are three exits, which will be the easiest? There are probably guards by every door, but, I look at the boys and bite my lip. I don't want to ask for help, but they may be my only chance. "Ryker, Brady I need your help" I slam the map on the ground "Which way is the forest with the big oak tree" Brady points to the exit on the other side of the building where I was just at. "We need to leave now." They give me confused looks. I roll my eyes. It's no time for them to be confused. I grab their hands and Ryker grabs the map "Lead the way" I say jerking my head the way the door is. He gives me a smile and starts dragging Brady and me.
