I really, REALLY, like series in which they take an overused trope and turn it on it's head.
Like..
-Madoka Magica gave a dark and twisted as fuck vibe to the "magical girl" genre
-Ore Monogatari!! completely judo flips the shoujo genre; and the "hot dude" is asexual and NOT the love interest and it's...it's so cute and refreshing ahhhh
-Lovely Complex. Now it's the female protagonist who's taller than their love interest by a shit ton. And it affects the male protagonist....not at all. It does nothing~ They're still a ball of energy and swag- //nuked
-Steven Universe ; finally a cartoon in which the characters have legitimate flaws and the kids act like fucking kids.
I would list some novels but I can't really think of any that "flip the tropes inside out" :/
