FRAGILE STRENGTH
The crowd’s cheers still echoed in the alpha’s ears, but none of it mattered. His world was cradled in his arms, trembling and pale. The omega’s body had given out, the weight of three weeks’ recovery from childbirth and endless nights with their newborns pressing down until he could take no more.
“Hyung! What’s wrong with him?” one of the staff shouted, rushing to open the van door.
“He’s not breathing right,” Vante snapped, voice thick with panic. The wolf was straining against his own control, ready to tear apart anyone who stood in the way. “Drive—now!”
The van sped off, leaving chaos behind. The omega’s head lolled against his chest, skin clammy, breaths shallow. The alpha pressed his forehead against his mate’s, whispering desperately.
“Stay awake. Please, love, stay with me. The cubs need you. I need you.”
By the time they reached the secluded home of the omega’s older brother, the alpha’s nerves were raw. Junghyun, with sharp eyes and sharper instincts, pulled his sibling from the alpha’s arms without a word and hurried him inside.
Minutes blurred into hours. Vante paced like a caged beast, listening to the distant cries of the cubs in the nursery. His chest ached—he wanted to hold them, comfort them, but he couldn’t leave his mate’s side.
Finally, junghyun emerged, wiping his hands. His expression was grim.
“You’re lucky you brought him here in time. His body is still healing from the premature birth. Three weeks—three weeks is nothing. And yet you had him dancing under blinding lights, forcing his body beyond its limit.”
The alpha’s head dropped, shame and regret burning through him. “He wanted to… he didn’t want the others to say he was weak.”
“Weak?” Junghyun's voice hardened. “He carried life inside him. He gave birth too early, risking his own body to bring those cubs safely into this world. And instead of being cherished, he’s treated like a disgrace?” His eyes flashed with fury. “You may be his mate, but if you fail him again, you’ll answer to me.”
The words cut deep, but the alpha didn’t fight them. He only nodded.
Inside the bedroom, the omega stirred, his lips pale nothing like the cherry red it used to be but his doe eyes fluttering open. The alpha rushed to his side, grabbing his hand.
“You scared me,” the alpha whispered, voice breaking.
Jungkook’s smile was faint, fragile. “I… I told you I was fine.”
“You’re not fine,” Vante snapped, then softened instantly, brushing damp strands of hair from his mate’s forehead. “You almost collapsed for good this time.”
Tears pricked the omega’s lashes. “I didn’t want to… disappoint them. Or you.”
Vante froze. Them. The band. The ones who sneered at his weakness, who whispered behind his back, who treated him as if being an omega—and a mother—was a stain all because of a misunderstanding. Rage clawed inside him, but he forced it down, focusing only on his mate.
“You could never disappoint me,” he said firmly, pressing kook's hand to his chest. “I don’t care what they think. From now on, I’ll protect you. Them, the company, the whole damn world, I'll burn it if I have to. You and our cubs—you're my everything.”
Jungkook’s eyes shimmered, for a second the sparkle in his eyes came back, but exhaustion pulled him back under. The alpha stayed by his side until his breathing steadied.
Then, faint cries rose from the nursery. Three tiny voices, fragile yet demanding, calling out for their mother. The alpha rose, wiping his face quickly, and walked into the softly lit room.
Taegukk stirred first, stretching small hands as though searching for comfort. Taeyeon kicked against her blanket, fierce even in her sleep. Jungae—the tiniest—lay curled in the corner of the crib, his cries weak but insistent.
Vante’s heart clenched. They were so small. Too small. Born before their time, their lives fragile threads him and his mate were now bound to protect. He lifted Jungae gently, pressing him against his chest.
“You’ll grow strong,” he whispered. “I promise you. I’ll protect you, all of you… no matter what it costs me.”
Behind him, the door creaked. Chanyeol stood there, arms folded, eyes serious.
“You can’t keep this secret forever,” he said quietly. “Sooner or later, the world—or your company—will find out about the cubs. And when they do…”
His words trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.
The alpha looked down at his son, then back at the other alpha. His voice was low, steady, but filled with dangerous conviction.
“Then they’ll learn exactly what I’m willing to do to protect my family.”
