The Letter

Walter,

If you're reading this, it means I'm physically not with you anymore but remember, I'll always be there with you in your heart. Worker bee, I can't even begin to describe how much joy you've brought into my life and how much I love you. Being your parent has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. I'm proud of how I raised you and have been able to see you become the man you are now. But I've seen you struggle too, and I've seen you sacrifice your dreams for us. So I think I owe you this, but I don't think I have the courage to tell you this personally, hence I'm leaving you this letter. I hope you'll understand the circumstances that were upon me when I made the following decisions and why they were kept secret from you and your sister.

Walter, your father, is alive. 15 years ago, he and I got divorced because of certain conflict of reasons, and he went away, forever. We were both young then, and in that heat of youth, we made some bad decisions, and I told him never to come back in our lives again. I'm sorry Walter, I lied to you about it, but at the time I thought it was the best thing to do.

But recently, since I was diagnosed, it really lent me some perspective, and I realized it was wrong. It was unfair to you and your sister, and even after whatever your father might've said, it was unfair to him too. So I asked Sean if he could track down your father, and he did. Your father had been moving here and there but his last known address is attached to this letter. Now you know the truth, and I think it might be best if you don't tell Odessa about it until you can confirm it. We both know how she is and I don't want you to get her hopes up for nothing. She'll already have been through too much. And that's all. But I want you know, I don't regret any of it. I cherish all of the things that have happened to me, but most of all, I cherish all the time I've got to spend with you, loving you and learning from you. I wouldn't have it any other way. You two are the light of my life, my precious; I'm with you till the end of time.
